Its story
A broad, battered shield of dark slate plates riveted to a frame of salt-pitted iron. Old hoist chain crosses its face, hammered flat beneath a narrow strip of blue glass. Its edges are chipped and smoke-darkened. When its bearer plants their feet beside an ally, the chain draws taut with a low, resonant groan, like a bridge taking weight.
Lore
Among route-keepers, the shield commemorates a stubborn kind of courage: staying where the danger is, not because the stone will hold, but because someone behind you still needs time. Its chain answers most clearly near failing bridges, gates, hoists, and other threatened structures.
History
After the Hanging Car's hoist chain began to tear loose, a mason refused to abandon the failing crossing. They braced the chain with their own body until the last passengers reached safety. The surviving chain links were later set into this shield, preserving the place they held and the lives carried across it.
