Echo shades
People call them Echo shades because a faint, delayed repetition is often the only warning they leave behind. Each one seems to preserve fragments of sounds from its origin, though it cannot form those fragments into speech.

Ecology
A thin, wavering silhouette with a face like a blurred reflection. Its edges ripple as if heard rather than seen, and its hands stretch into long, translucent fingers. When it moves, its outline arrives a heartbeat after its sound.
Behavior
Echo shades skitter in abrupt, soundless bursts, then hold perfectly still. They prefer to harry a group from several angles rather than stand and trade blows.
How it lives
Echo shades form where a powerful sound was abruptly silenced, especially after a catastrophe or a forbidden ritual. They have no need to eat, but gather near places where voices carry and repeat.
Lair
An Echo shade has no fixed lair, but often gathers near a place where a voice, bell, or other sound was abruptly silenced.
- Habitat
- Ruined halls, abandoned theaters, echoing caverns, and other places with dim light and hard surfaces.

What drives it
To repeat and prolong the last sounds it remembers, and to drain the strength of living creatures that disturb its silence.
After the fight
When destroyed, an Echo shade collapses into a scatter of soundless motes. For a few seconds, nearby voices seem to repeat the last word spoken in its presence.
