Nildar Sunblight, Resonant Outpost Commander

Nildar Sunblight was sent away from his father's fortress to command an isolated outpost and recover valuable materials. In this version of the encounter, the outpost has been relocated beneath the frozen waters near Kelvin's Cairn, where Nildar discovered ancient resonance pylons embedded in the rock. He had chardalyn woven into custom bracers, believing the devices would make him indispensable to Xardorok. Instead, the crystal has amplified his paranoia and sharpened his hunger for control.

Duergar Resilience. Nildar has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or stunned. He also has advantage on saving throws against effects that would knock him prone while he is touching stone or metal.
Dwarven Resilience. Nildar has advantage on saving throws against poison, and he is immune to the poisoned condition.
Resonant Anchor. Nildar has advantage on saving throws against being moved against his will while he is within 10 feet of an active pylon.
Chardalyn Resonance. At the start of each of Nildar's turns, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, Bracer Shock recharges. If all three pylons are disabled, Bracer Shock does not recharge this way.
Aquatic Adaptation. Nildar can breathe air and water. He ignores the normal movement penalties caused by fighting underwater and has advantage on ability checks made to resist underwater currents.
Legendary Actions. Nildar has three legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Nildar regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

Spells

Darkness (level 2, evocation). Nildar creates a magical sphere of darkness centered on a point within 60 feet. The sphere spreads around corners and lasts for 10 minutes with concentration. Darkvision cannot see through it.
Command (level 1, enchantment). Nildar magically commands one creature within 60 feet that can hear him. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or follow a one-word command on its next turn, if possible.
Water Breathing (level 3, transmutation). Nildar touches a willing creature and grants it the ability to breathe underwater for 24 hours. He can cast this on himself without material components.

Actions

Multiattack. Nildar makes two Chardalyn Warpick attacks and one Bracer Shock attack, in any order.
Chardalyn Warpick. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 () piercing damage plus 4 () psychic damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn.
Bracer Shock. Nildar releases a pulse from his chardalyn bracers. Each creature of Nildar's choice within 15 feet must make a Intelligence saving throw, taking 18 () psychic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that fails the save cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn.
Duergar Invisibility. Nildar magically turns invisible until he attacks, casts a spell, uses Bracer Shock, or until his concentration ends, up to 1 hour. Any equipment Nildar wears or carries is invisible with him. The effect ends early if Nildar is incapacitated.
Enlarge. Nildar enlarges himself for 1 minute, along with anything he is wearing or carrying. While enlarged, Nildar is Large, his reach increases by 5 feet, and his weapon attacks deal an extra 4 () damage. If Nildar lacks room to become Large, he attains the maximum size possible. Nildar can end this effect as a bonus action.

Reactions

Pylon Deflection. When a creature Nildar can see within 5 feet of an active pylon is hit by an attack, Nildar forces that creature to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, Nildar moves the creature up to 10 feet to an unoccupied space adjacent to the pylon, and the attack deals half damage instead.

Legendary Actions

Resonant Step. Nildar moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks. He can move through the space of a hostile creature, but that creature's space counts as difficult terrain.
Bracer Pulse. Nildar targets one creature he can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a Intelligence saving throw or take 7 () psychic damage and be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.
Command the Resonance (costs 2 actions). Nildar uses one Chardalyn Warpick attack or moves one active pylon up to 10 feet along the floor. A pylon cannot move through a creature or another pylon.
Black-Ice Crescendo (costs 3 actions). Nildar uses Bracer Shock, if available, without expending its recharge. Each creature damaged by this use has disadvantage on its next saving throw against a lair action before the end of the next round.

Notes for the game master

This is a custom CR 9 elite version of Nildar Sunblight, based on the canonical Duergar creature and Nildar's role in Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.
Nildar has three legendary actions per round, taken at the end of another creature's turn.
Nildar regains Bracer Shock on a roll of 5 or 6 at the start of his turn.
Nildar's Duergar Magic trait is represented through Darkness, Command, and Water Breathing.
The underwater environment is intentional for this variant and is not part of Nildar's standard adventure presentation.

Tactics

  1. Opening

Nildar begins invisible and underwater, allowing his guards or environmental hazards to reveal the intruders. He opens with a pylon shockwave, then uses Enlarge and charges the most isolated character.

  2. Mid-fight

Nildar alternates between invisibility and aggressive melee attacks. He uses legendary actions to reposition, trigger bracer pulses, and punish characters who cluster near a pylon. He targets spellcasters and anyone attempting to disrupt the lair.

  3. End of the fight

Nildar uses Bracer Shock to disable reactions, then focuses on isolated or injured characters. If reduced below 30 hit points, he activates Enlarge if it remains unused and fights beside the pylons, forcing the party to choose between pursuing him and disabling the lair.

  4. Retreat

Nildar retreats through narrow maintenance tunnels if escape is possible. He abandons treasure and wounded allies but never abandons the bracers. If cornered, he overloads the nearest pylon as a last resort.

How it fights

Begin invisible and attack from an unexpected vertical angle.
Use Resonant Step to avoid opportunity attacks and stay near active pylons.
Use Bracer Pulse against characters concentrating on spells.
Trigger pylon shockwaves when two or more characters are within the same radius.
Use Command to order a strong melee character away from the party or toward a dangerous current.
Retreat through underwater tunnels if the pylons are disabled.

Who it attacks first

Characters attempting to disable pylons
Spellcasters concentrating on protective or control magic
Characters with low Intelligence saving throws
Healers and characters who can remove invisibility or psychic conditions
Isolated targets vulnerable to melee attacks

Works well with

Duergar guards can use Enlarge and melee attacks to keep characters near the pylons.
Aquatic predators can exploit the pylon's difficult terrain and force characters into the shockwave radius.
A spellcaster with silence or dispel magic can interfere with Nildar's commands and magical concealment.
A creature with resistance or immunity to psychic damage can safely operate the pylons.

How to beat it

Keep the party spread out to reduce the impact of Bracer Shock and pylon effects.
Use thunder or radiant damage against the chardalyn bracers and pylons.
Force Nildar away from the pylons with grapples, forced movement, or difficult terrain.
Use blindsight, truesight, or readied actions to counter Duergar Invisibility.
Protect Intelligence-based characters and spellcasters from repeated psychic effects.

Ways to avoid a fight

Nildar can negotiate if doing so buys time to activate the pylons or summon reinforcements.
He may offer information about Xardorok, the chardalyn dragon, or nearby outposts in exchange for the party disabling a rival faction.
A character who appeals to Nildar's rivalry with Xardorok can attempt a DC 17 Charisma (Deception or Persuasion) check to make him reveal tactical information.
Nildar can redirect the pylons to open sealed underwater passages or collapse tunnels behind pursuers.

Ecology

A compact, iron-gray duergar with a braided black beard threaded through with silver wire. Nildar wears barnacled plate, a hood of seal leather, and two black chardalyn bracers that glow with submerged violet light. Tiny bubbles leak from cracks in the bracers even when he stands on dry stone.

Behavior

Nildar is disciplined, suspicious, and cruelly practical. He speaks little during combat, communicates through hand signs, and treats every opponent as a component in a larger tactical problem. The chardalyn in his bracers has made him increasingly obsessed with pressure, resonance, and the sound of minds breaking.

How it lives

Nildar commands a mixed force of duergar salvagers, enslaved aquatic predators, and chardalyn-animated machinery. His outpost harvests rare black crystal from the seafloor and tests how its psychic resonance behaves under crushing pressure.

Lair

Nildar's lair is a flooded command chamber containing three chardalyn pylons arranged in a triangle around a raised central platform. The pylons hum through the water, distort sound, and create psychic afterimages of everyone in the room. At initiative count 20, losing initiative ties, Nildar can use one lair action. He cannot use the same lair action two rounds in a row. Pylon Shockwave: One active pylon releases a psychic wave in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on itself. Creatures in the area must make a DC 16 Intelligence saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) psychic damage and being pushed up to 10 feet on a failed save, or half damage with no push on a success. Resonant Lock: Until initiative count 20 on the next round, the area within 10 feet of one pylon is difficult terrain, and creatures that start their turns there must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or have their speed reduced to 0 until the start of their next turn. Pylon Overload: One damaged or disabled pylon detonates. Creatures within 15 feet must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Each pylon has AC 15, 30 hit points, immunity to poison and psychic damage, and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. A successful DC 16 Intelligence (Arcana) check made adjacent to a pylon disables it for 1 minute. Disabling all three pylons removes Nildar's legendary actions and ends his Bracer Shock recharge ability.

Habitat

Black crystal dust caught in cracks and seams of the ice.
A low vibration felt through stone, armor, and teeth.
Duergar tool marks around submerged tunnels.
Dead fish or small aquatic creatures with blackened eyes.
Distant flashes of violet light beneath the water.

Lore

Nildar Sunblight was sent away from his father's fortress to command an isolated outpost and recover valuable materials. In this version of the encounter, the outpost has been relocated beneath the frozen waters near Kelvin's Cairn, where Nildar discovered ancient resonance pylons embedded in the rock. He had chardalyn woven into custom bracers, believing the devices would make him indispensable to Xardorok. Instead, the crystal has amplified his paranoia and sharpened his hunger for control.

What drives it

Nildar wants to prove that he is more capable than his brother and worthy of inheriting the Sunblight legacy. He intends to master the pylons, weaponize their psychic resonance, and return to his father's fortress as a commander no one can challenge.

After the fight

When Nildar falls, the chardalyn bracers continue to pulse for several minutes. Destroying or safely removing them requires a successful DC 17 Intelligence (Arcana) check, followed by dealing 20 radiant or thunder damage to each bracer. On a failed check, the creature attempting the removal takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage.

“He had chardalyn woven into custom bracers, believing the devices would make him indispensable to Xardorok.”
From its lore

Variants

If the party is already exhausted, remove one pylon and reduce Nildar to 120 hit points.
For a stronger encounter, give Nildar a fourth legendary action option that lets him activate a pylon as a bonus action.
For a less aquatic version, replace swim speed with a 25-foot burrow speed through packed snow and ice.
For a more tragic version, allow a character to suppress the bracers with a DC 18 Wisdom (Insight) or Charisma (Persuasion) check after Nildar is reduced below 20 hit points.
If Nildar is fought without his pylons, reduce his challenge to approximately CR 7 by removing legendary actions and Chardalyn Resonance.

Hooks

Plot hooks

The submerged outpost is harvesting chardalyn from a cavern beneath the ice, threatening to poison the waters near Ten-Towns.
Nildar has captured a local expedition and is using the prisoners as living test subjects for psychic resonance.
The pylons are older than the Duergar settlement and may be part of a forgotten Netherese installation.
A damaged pylon continues transmitting a psychic distress signal after Nildar's defeat.
Nildar possesses orders proving that the outpost was only one node in a larger chardalyn network.

How to use it

Use Nildar as a hard solo encounter for four 5th-level characters when two or more pylons remain active.
Pair him with 2 to 4 duergar, aquatic constructs, or hazardous terrain for a climactic outpost battle.
Allow the party to disable pylons before combat, reducing the encounter's difficulty.
Make the room partially flooded, with vertical shafts, broken catwalks, and currents that reward mobility.

Treasure

Chardalyn Bracers of Resonance, if the curse is removed or the party accepts the risk.
Chardalyn warpick worth 250 gp to a collector, though it radiates faint psychic energy.
A sealed command cylinder containing orders from Xardorok Sunblight.
Three pouches of raw chardalyn dust worth 100 gp each to a specialist, but dangerous to handle.
A map showing underwater tunnels and hidden routes beneath the surrounding ice.
