Fane-Touched Dead - AI-generated fantasy Monster

Fane-Touched Dead

Locals say the Rootwell once supplied clean water to a shrine called the Fane. Something beneath the stones soured the spring, and those who died in the clearing began to rise with roots in their mouths. The Fane-Touched Dead is not a guardian by choice. It is a body caught in the blight's pull, lashing out at living things that come near the source.

Undead Nature. The Fane-Touched Dead does not require air, food, drink, or sleep.
Root-Bound Stride. The Fane-Touched Dead ignores difficult terrain created by roots and similar plant growth.
Fane's Scald. When the Fane-Touched Dead takes radiant damage, it has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.

Actions

Root-Raked Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 () slashing damage plus 4 () necrotic damage.
Blight Pulse. The dead creature exhales a wave of sickly green spores in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Constitution saving throw, taking 18 () necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails also cannot regain hit points until the end of its next turn. A creature fully behind one of the Rootwell's standing stones has total cover from the pulse and is unaffected. The Fane-Touched Dead can use this action once, then must finish a short or long rest to use it again.

Reactions

Snaring Root. When a creature the Fane-Touched Dead can see hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet, the dead creature lashes that attacker with a root. The attacker must succeed on a Strength saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn. The Fane-Touched Dead can use this reaction once per round.

Notes for the game master

The Fane-Touched Dead is a custom undead creature, not a canonical D&D monster.
Exposed roots make the clearing difficult terrain for creatures other than the Fane-Touched Dead.
The standing stones are environmental cover. A creature fully behind a stone has total cover from Blight Pulse if the stone lies between it and the cone's origin.
Blight Pulse is a custom rechargeable-style encounter feature with one use per short or long rest.

Tactics

  1. Opening

It lurches from the well or a root-choked patch of ground and releases Blight Pulse when it can catch at least two creatures in the cone. It tries to catch anyone who has not recognized the standing stones as cover.

  2. Mid-fight

It uses its claws against nearby targets and repositions to line up multiple creatures for a blight pulse. It avoids standing where a stone blocks its own approach.

  3. End of the fight

If badly wounded, it spends its remaining movement trying to reach a creature outside the shelter of the stones, then claws whoever is easiest to reach. It does not pursue beyond the clearing.

  4. Retreat

The Fane-Touched Dead never bargains or retreats. If reduced to 10 hit points or fewer, it fights until destroyed, though it instinctively turns away from a source of radiant damage.

How it fights

Use the roots and stones to create meaningful movement choices rather than simply blocking every route.
The creature's pulse is strongest as a warning and tactical challenge, not as a repeated area attack.
Keep the well visible so characters can infer that the creature and the corruption are connected.

Who it attacks first

Living creatures close to the cracked well.
Creatures outside the shelter of the standing stones.
Anyone attempting to investigate or enter the well.

Works well with

Blighted roots, difficult terrain, or lesser undead can steer characters toward the standing stones and make the shelter mechanic immediately legible.
A creature that restrains or slows characters can make the cone more threatening, but avoid stacking effects that prevent all access to cover.

How to beat it

Use the standing stones as total cover from Blight Pulse, then move between them as the dead creature advances.
Radiant damage and effects that destroy or turn undead are especially effective.
Ranged attacks can wear it down while characters remain behind stone cover, though the uneven ground may limit good firing positions.

Ways to avoid a fight

A character can examine the corpse from a safe distance and make a DC 13 Wisdom (Medicine or Nature) check to discover that its roots point toward the cracked well.
A character can use an action to take cover behind one of the standing stones. This grants total cover from Blight Pulse if the character is fully concealed from the creature's cone.
A character who succeeds on a DC 14 Intelligence (Religion) check recognizes the creature as undead warped by a place-bound corruption, rather than a conventional grave guardian.

Ecology

A swollen, waterlogged corpse with barklike skin and a face split by thin roots. Its ribs flex as if breathing, though its lungs are filled with black soil. Green light throbs beneath its sternum just before it releases a pulse.

Behavior

It moves with the slow certainty of something pulled by roots. It prioritizes living creatures that leave the stones' shelter, striking at anyone who appears to be tending, touching, or examining the well. It does not speak and cannot be distracted by ordinary food or treasure.

How it lives

The Fane-Touched Dead is an undead vessel animated by blight seeping through old roots and cracked stone. It has no need to eat, drink, or breathe. The roots within it draw moisture from the clearing and carry the corruption back toward the well.

Lair

The Rootwell is a sunken clearing surrounding a cracked stone well. Exposed roots cross the uneven ground, and three standing stones offer sturdy shelter from the blight pulse. The Fane-Touched Dead is most often found close to the well, where the roots gather thickly.

Habitat
The Rootwell, sunken clearings, overgrown shrines, and places where an old source of corruption has reached buried roots.

Signs that it is near

A greenish sheen on the water pooled around the well.
Pale roots protruding from old bones and carcasses.
A soft, damp thumping from beneath the clearing, like a slow heartbeat.

Lore

Locals say the Rootwell once supplied clean water to a shrine called the Fane. Something beneath the stones soured the spring, and those who died in the clearing began to rise with roots in their mouths. The Fane-Touched Dead is not a guardian by choice. It is a body caught in the blight's pull, lashing out at living things that come near the source.

What drives it

Driven by the blight beneath the well, it tries to keep living creatures close to the clearing and away from any attempt to reach the source.

After the fight

When destroyed, the corpse collapses into a nest of pale rootlets. The blight pulse subsides for a few minutes, leaving the well quiet enough for investigation. A character who examines the remains and succeeds on a DC 13 Wisdom (Medicine or Nature) check can tell the dead creature was drawn toward the well, not raised to guard it.

From its lore

Variants

For a lower-level party, reduce hit points to 52, remove Snaring Root, and reduce Blight Pulse to 3d8 necrotic damage.
For a more dangerous encounter, give it one additional use of Blight Pulse, but telegraph each use with a brightening glow beneath its sternum.

Hooks

Plot hooks

The corpse bears a token from someone who vanished while investigating the old Fane.
The well's blight pulse briefly stops when the creature is destroyed, revealing a narrow passage below the cracked rim.
A survivor claims the dead creature was seen standing motionless beside the well before the roots began moving.

How to use it

Use as the principal threat in the sunken clearing around the cracked stone well.
Make the three standing stones important tactical shelter. Each stone provides total cover from the directional cone of Blight Pulse to a creature fully behind it.
The clearing's exposed roots make the ground difficult terrain for creatures other than the Fane-Touched Dead.
For a more difficult encounter, add lesser undead or blighted roots as separate hazards rather than increasing this creature's damage.

Treasure

A tarnished Fane token lodged between the creature's ribs, worth 10 gp to a collector and useful as a clue.
A small quantity of clear water may be recovered from the well after the blight's influence is disrupted.
