The Unanswered Bell - AI-generated fantasy Monster

The Unanswered Bell

The Unanswered Bell is the name locals use because, when it walks, the forest's familiar calls fall silent and no answering bird-song follows. It is not the World Tree's voice, but a fey spirit that chose to bind itself to the tree long ago. Its humanoid guise is a sign that the grove is at peace. When the tree is injured, that guise breaks apart, and the guardian's burning eyes become visible even through solid darkness.

Legendary Resistance. The Unanswered Bell has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Veilbound Passage. The Unanswered Bell can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 10 force damage if it ends its turn inside an object. It can enter and leave areas of magical darkness without penalty.
Eyes on the Roots. The Unanswered Bell can see normally in magical and nonmagical darkness. It cannot be surprised while within 1 mile of the World Tree, and it knows when the tree or its roots take damage.
Legendary Actions. The Unanswered Bell has three legendary actions, regaining spent actions at the start of its turn. It can take one legendary action at a time, at the end of another creature's turn.
Rootbound Renewal. The Unanswered Bell regains 20 hit points at the start of its turn while within 120 feet of the World Tree, unless it has taken radiant damage since the end of its last turn. This trait does not function while the tree is dead.

Spells

Innate Spellcasting (cantrip, various). The Unanswered Bell can cast these spells without material components, using Charisma as its spellcasting ability. At will: darkness, detect magic, speak with plants. Three times per day each: dispel magic, greater restoration, wall of thorns. Once per day each: foresight, transport via plants.

Actions

Multiattack. The Unanswered Bell makes three attacks, in any combination of Rootglass Lance and Grasping Shade.
Rootglass Lance. Melee Spell Attack: to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 27 () force damage plus 18 () necrotic damage. If the target is concentrating, it has disadvantage on the resulting Constitution saving throw.
Grasping Shade. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 31 () necrotic damage, and the target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 20 feet toward the Unanswered Bell and restrained by spectral roots. A restrained creature repeats the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The roots vanish if the Unanswered Bell is incapacitated.
Crownfall. Recharge 5-6. The Unanswered Bell releases a wave of shrieking leaves and living dark in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 72 () necrotic damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails is also blinded until the end of its next turn. Plants and magical vegetation in the area are not damaged.
The Tree Remembers. The Unanswered Bell chooses up to three creatures it can see within 120 feet. Each target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a target takes 36 () psychic damage and is frightened until the end of its next turn. On a success, it takes half damage and is not frightened. A creature that has harmed the World Tree or deliberately despoiled a natural place in the last 24 hours makes this save with disadvantage.

Reactions

Answer the Wound. When a creature the Unanswered Bell can see within 60 feet damages the World Tree or one of its roots, the guardian moves up to half its speed toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks and makes one Grasping Shade attack against it if it is within reach.

Legendary Actions

Slip Between Leaves. The Unanswered Bell moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Root-Tug. One creature the Unanswered Bell can see within 60 feet must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 15 feet toward it.
Lance of the Old Bough (costs 2 actions). The Unanswered Bell makes one Rootglass Lance attack.
A Silence Like Winter (costs 3 actions). Each hostile creature of the Unanswered Bell's choice within 20 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 22 () psychic damage and be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.
Role
Solo guardian and negotiable protector
Built for
Designed as a difficult solo encounter for a party of four or five characters around level 20; adjust for party size, optimization, and access to magic weapons.

Notes for the game master

This is a custom Generic Fantasy creature using D&D 5e-compatible conventions, not a canonical monster.
The Unanswered Bell is intended as a solo encounter for a high-level party. Adjust hit points or remove legendary actions for smaller or less optimized groups.
While in its calm guise, it uses the same statistics but does not attack unless the World Tree or the surrounding natural world is threatened.
If an effect would banish it, it instead disappears into the World Tree's roots and returns when the tree is safe, unless the effect specifically severs its bond.

Tactics

  1. Opening

Appear between the intruders and the tree, speak a single warning, then use The Tree Remembers. If they continue the threat, open with Crownfall against a clustered group.

  2. Mid-fight

Use The Tree Remembers against proven desecrators and those concentrating on spells, then restrain dangerous melee combatants or pull ranged attackers out of position.

  3. End of the fight

If badly wounded, use Crownfall to break up a clustered group, then restrain the most immediate threat with Grasping Shade. It does not pursue fleeing creatures far from the World Tree once they stop endangering it.

  4. Retreat

It does not flee while the tree remains in immediate danger. If the threat ends or moves beyond its territory, it withdraws into the tree's shadow and resumes its calm guise.

How it fights

Use its flight and climbing speed to reposition between attackers and the tree.
Apply frightened, restrained, and blinded conditions to disrupt coordinated attacks.
Use legendary movement to avoid being pinned in melee.
Speak plainly and offer a chance to cease harmful actions before escalating.

Who it attacks first

Creatures currently damaging the World Tree or its roots
Creatures deliberately harming nearby nature
Spellcasters concentrating on effects that threaten the tree
Creatures attempting to flee with a living seed or other part of the tree

Works well with

Allies who can restrain foes or create difficult terrain help it keep attackers away from the World Tree.
A druid, treant, or other nature guardian can reinforce its warning and help the party discover a nonviolent solution.
Its mobility and sight in darkness pair well with allies that can conceal the tree's vulnerable roots.

How to beat it

Spread out to reduce the impact of Crownfall.
Use radiant damage, force damage, or magical attacks to bypass some of its defenses.
Break line of sight and use cover to limit its control over the battlefield.
Address the harm to the World Tree directly; ending the threat can stop the fight more reliably than reducing its hit points.

Ways to avoid a fight

It can speak with intruders before fighting and explain what action has drawn its attention.
It can guide respectful visitors through the surrounding forest, provided they do not approach the World Tree without permission.
It may accept restitution, a vow, or a practical act of repair in place of violence when the tree is no longer in danger.
It can reveal memories held in the tree's roots, though it will not share them with those who intend harm.

Ecology

At peace, it resembles a slender elf with bark-pale skin, leaf-veined hair, and a still, luminous gaze, though some witnesses see a serene, wingless angel instead. When the World Tree is threatened, its shape unravels into a tall silhouette of layered darkness. Two green-gold eyes burn in its face, and its limbs trail fine roots and drifting leaves that cast shadows in the wrong direction.

Behavior

It is patient, articulate, and watchful while the World Tree is safe. It warns before attacking when circumstances allow, and judges intent as well as action. Once the tree is harmed or its roots are directly threatened, its calm form collapses into a protective shadow spirit. It attacks deliberate harm to nature, but may spare the misguided, coerced, or remorseful.

How it lives

A singular fey spirit bound to the World Tree and the ancient network of roots, shade, and living memory around it. It does not reproduce or require food. When its physical manifestation is dispersed, it reforms near the tree after seven days unless the tree itself is destroyed.

Lair

The World Tree's shadowed root chamber, a hollow among its oldest roots, or any place where its roots reach the surface. In its lair, the guardian can sense damage to the tree through the root network.

Habitat
Shadows and darkness, especially ancient forests, sacred groves, and the rootways surrounding the World Tree.

Signs that it is near

Birdsong stops abruptly beneath the World Tree, with no answering call from the surrounding forest.
Two green-gold points of light appear in a patch of darkness, then vanish when approached.
Fresh cuts in bark seep clear sap that briefly glows like starlight.
Shadows cast by the tree lean toward the intruder, regardless of the light source.

Lore

The Unanswered Bell is the name locals use because, when it walks, the forest's familiar calls fall silent and no answering bird-song follows. It is not the World Tree's voice, but a fey spirit that chose to bind itself to the tree long ago. Its humanoid guise is a sign that the grove is at peace. When the tree is injured, that guise breaks apart, and the guardian's burning eyes become visible even through solid darkness.

What drives it

Protect the World Tree and the living world sustained by its roots. Punish deliberate harm, but allow a path to atonement when the danger can be ended.

After the fight

When the danger passes, its burning eyes dim and the creature returns to its quiet elven or angelic guise. It leaves no corpse. The World Tree keeps a faint new ring in its bark, while the surrounding forest slowly regains its ordinary sounds.

“It is not the World Tree's voice, but a fey spirit that chose to bind itself to the tree long ago.”
From its lore

Variants

The Quiet Witness: A gentler guardian that favors warnings, healing, and restraint over lethal force.
The Last Ring: A guardian whose World Tree is dying, unable to renew itself but able to unleash Crownfall more often.
The Borrowed Face: A variant that takes the shape of someone familiar to visitors, reflecting the tree's memories rather than its own.

Hooks

Plot hooks

The guardian has awakened, but the World Tree's wound was caused by a hidden saboteur who wants the party blamed.
A dying branch has begun to poison the forest. The guardian attacks anyone approaching it, not understanding that a careful intervention could save the tree.
The party needs a memory stored in the World Tree's roots, and must persuade its guardian that retrieving it will not harm the tree.
Someone has stolen a living seed from the World Tree. The guardian asks the party to recover it before the seed loses its connection to the roots.

How to use it

Use as a high-level solo guardian whose presence makes negotiation and restraint meaningful alternatives to combat.
Set the battle among roots, branches, and shifting patches of magical darkness, while keeping the World Tree itself vulnerable to collateral harm.
Establish clear warning signs and a chance to stop the source of harm before the guardian attacks.

Treasure

A bead of luminous amber containing a single remembered song of the World Tree.
A fallen leaf that remains green and can serve as a token of safe passage through the guardian's forest.
If the guardian willingly offers it, a root-knot that can guide its bearer toward the World Tree.
