Vesper Brass-Rule

0·Female·Small
Lawful Neutral, increasingly troubled by the human cost of perfect procedure

Species

Rock Gnome

Appearance

Vesper Brass-Rule is a small, impeccably groomed rock gnome whose presence makes a room feel measured. Her silver-streaked brown hair is drawn into a severe knot so tight it seems to pull her pointed ears backward. Wire-rimmed spectacles rest low on her narrow nose, their lenses etched with microscopic legal notation. She moves in crisp, economical increments, never wasting a gesture, yet her hands are surprisingly gentle when handling damaged papers. Her skin has the warm, pebbled texture of river stone, and a faint brass sheen clings to her fingertips from years of enchanted ink. The contradictory impression she leaves is of someone both immovable and exhausted, like a courthouse pillar that has learned to breathe.

Height3 feet 7 inches
BuildCompact and wiry, with the dense, durable frame of a clockmaker and the narrow shoulders of someone accustomed to leaning over documents for twelve-hour shifts
EyesSmoky blue-grey with pinpricks of copper light when she detects deception
HairDeep brown with precise silver streaks, pulled into a severe knot
SkinWarm granite-grey with faint rose undertones and a subtle brass sheen on the fingertips

A hushed, measured murmur with immaculate diction. She pauses before nouns as if confirming their legal definition, and she can make a single whispered sentence command more attention than a shouted order.”

Distinguishing Features

A thin brass line runs from her left temple to the corner of her mouth, a scar caused by a malfunctioning animated seal.

Her spectacles reflect written words that are not present on the page.

The nail of her right index finger is permanently stained black by enchanted ink.

She carries herself like a magistrate but tends injured animals hidden in the Exchange's ventilation galleries.

Her shadow occasionally holds a quill even when her hands are empty.

Voice

Soft, dry, and almost tuneless, with the faint rasp of paper sliding across brass. When angered, she becomes quieter rather than louder.

Clothing

A sharply tailored charcoal-grey vest over a high-collared white shirt, dark trousers reinforced at the knees, polished ankle boots, and sleeves pinned neatly above the elbows to prevent ink smudges. A fitted belt satchel holds contract rolls, sealing wax, chalk, folded spectacles cloths, and a tiny emergency kettle. Her only ornament is a dull brass office key worn on a black cord.

Body Language

Her posture is rigid enough to seem architectural. She aligns objects with the edge of a table while listening, touches her spectacles only when someone has lied, and keeps one hand resting on her satchel whenever negotiations become dangerous. When genuinely frightened, she becomes even more still.
