Channel-Warden Vara Silt-Stalker
Channel-Warden Vara Silt-Stalker
At the table
Voice
A dry, rough-edged rasp emerges from a broad throat, with a faint wet click at the end of certain consonants. It carries cleanly over rushing water without becoming a shout. Anger makes her speech faster and more sharply articulated, as if she is issuing urgent deck orders.
She speaks in clipped, practical phrases shaped by deck calls and channel warnings. Her vocabulary is rich in current, depth, and load-bearing comparisons; when making a promise, she states exactly what she can deliver and what could prevent it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Vara responds to competence, directness, and concern for the workers who bear the risks. She will share practical information with travelers who explain their purpose and respect local passage customs. Attempts to threaten her crew or demand exclusive channel rights make her cool and exacting. A useful offer earns a test of reliability before trust.
Goal
Secure a fair, renewable passage agreement with the root-clans and keep the Compact's dredging crews united while the tremors open new routes.
Motivation
Vara wants passage rights that recognize the people who maintain the channels, not merely those who own contracts. She is driven by loyalty to working crews and by the fear that another preventable wreck will prove she has not learned enough from the first.
Appearance
Vara is a sleek, dark-scaled Saurian whose hide has the polished, faintly pebbled sheen of river stones worn smooth by years of silt-laden currents. Fine pale grit gathers in the shallow ridges along her jaw and forearms despite her oil-treated armor. She moves with a low, balanced glide, tail making small corrections before her boots do; in a crowded room she unconsciously claims the clear path through it, as if every floor were a skiff deck. Her unexpected detail is a string of bright, hand-painted clay fish tied inside her coat, each a tiny memorial to someone she brought home. She leaves the impression of a current that has learned to wear a belt and carry a blade.
Clothing
Close-fitted, dark leather armor worked with silt-repellent oil, reinforced at the ribs and shoulders with thin overlapping plates. She wears a patched river cloak, a broad belt crowded with line hooks, and soft-soled boots whose edges are scored for grip on wet planks.
Body language
Her shoulders remain loose even when her eyes sharpen. Vara angles her body toward open water or a doorway, and her tail traces small, controlled arcs behind her. When she is unconvinced, she taps one claw against the nearest hard surface in a steady rhythm. When frightened, she becomes exceptionally still and watches the waterline.

Combat
AC 16 · HP 88 · 30 ft.Vara uses the terrain rather than holding a line. She opens with a ranged strike or a fast approach to isolate an exposed enemy, then applies Sneak Attack and uses Fancy Footwork to withdraw before retaliation. In channels, she favors skiffs, ropes, narrow ledges, and poor visibility, aiming to separate raiders from their crew. She disengages or bargains if fighting would endanger the barge crew or collapse a fragile passage.

Background
Vara grew up on a narrow root-bridge settlement where every family paid passage dues to whichever clan controlled the channel that season. She learned to read water by its smell and the faint tremor against a pole before she was trusted with a boat. During a surge years ago, a dredging barge broke loose and pinned a skiff crew beneath a root arch. Vara could have cut her towline and escaped. Instead she turned her light craft into the current, used its rudder as a lever, and freed three trapped workers before the channel swallowed the barge. One of them, Deep-Dwarf rigger Hurni, became her closest friend and most persistent critic. The event made Vara a Compact channel captain, but also left her convinced that every rescue can be planned if only she watches closely enough. Now she commands scouting skiffs ahead of the dredging barges, bargains with Saurian root-clans for passage, and hunts raiders who prey on isolated crews. She is trying to keep the Silt-Guild Compact's crews from being split by a new charter dispute, while a sequence of ley-vein tremors opens passages nobody can safely claim.
Role in the story
A capable ally, negotiator, and field commander whose crew's safety is entangled with contested passage rights and newly disturbed channels. She can guide characters into the Deep Silt's trade politics, but her hidden evidence may force them to choose between exposing a profiteer and preserving the Compact's fragile unity.
