Skravik
Mariner captain
Skravik
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Skravik is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf whose body has the dense, slightly hunched shape of a man who has spent a century leaning into storms. He moves with a sailor's rolling precision on dry land, as though the ground is merely a badly behaved deck. His beard is braided into five heavy cords, each wrapped with tar-black thread and tiny bits of sea glass. His skin is weathered copper-brown, creased deeply around the mouth and hands, while his eyebrows remain startlingly pale and soft. He smells of kelp, lamp oil, juniper, and old iron. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he occupies more space than his height suggests, bracing one hand on furniture and unconsciously judging every ceiling beam. The contradictory impression is that his battered, storm-worn exterior surrounds an almost delicate habit of folding paper birds from discarded charts.
“A low, gravelly baritone with a faint rasp of breath at the start of every sentence. He speaks slowly when calm, abruptly when giving orders, and sometimes loses the thread of a sentence only to finish it several minutes later as if no time had passed.”

Distinguishing Features
Five beard braids threaded with black tar and sea glass.
A brass compass whose needle points toward the nearest distressed person rather than north.
Deep pressure marks across his palms from decades of hauling wet rope, with unusually smooth fingertips from folding paper.
He carries a constant scent of juniper, kelp, lamp oil, and hot metal.
His shadow sometimes appears to sway half a heartbeat after he stops moving, a phenomenon he calls seasickness in the light.
Voice
“Like gravel rolling in a brass bucket, softened unexpectedly when he speaks to frightened people.”
Clothing
A salt-stained blue greatcoat patched with sailcloth, a sleeveless wool vest, heavy tarred trousers, deck boots reinforced with brass nails, and a red scarf knotted beneath his beard. He wears a cracked brass compass on a cord around his neck, though the needle points toward whatever person nearby is most emotionally distressed.
Body Language
Skravik plants his feet wide and grips nearby surfaces as if expecting the world to tilt. His beard cords swing like pendulums when he turns his head. When calm, he folds paper birds with precise, trembling fingers. When frightened, he becomes unnaturally still and presses his thumb against the inside of his wrist as though checking a pulse that belongs to the sea.
