Maximus Havorsen
Paladin, Oath of the Just Mercy
Maximus Havorsen
Species
Human
Appearance
Maximus is a broad-shouldered human man with the compact, weathered strength of someone who has spent more time in a saddle than at a training yard. His short black hair is clipped close at the sides, while the top has a stubborn cowlick that refuses every attempt at discipline. His brown eyes are steady and tired, and his square jaw tightens whenever he is deciding whether mercy will help or merely postpone harm. His old city watch coat hangs loose over dark blue and white armor, its cuffs carefully restitched and its brass buttons polished until they shine like small coins. A blue cloak edged in white rests over his shoulders. He moves with economical, mounted habits, turning his whole body before crossing a room and keeping one hand near the nearest exit. The unexpected thing about him is that, despite his formidable build and solemn bearing, he has an almost delicate way of handling cups, reins, bandages, and frightened animals. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he pauses, draws a quiet breath through his nose, and clears his throat before speaking, as if every sentence must first pass inspection.
“His voice is low, rough-edged, and controlled, with a faint regional lilt that gives some vowels a rounded, old-fashioned weight. He clears his throat before serious statements and leaves a deliberate pause before saying anything he cannot defend.”

Distinguishing Features
A tarnished brass city watch whistle worn smooth only where his thumb repeatedly rubs it
A pale crescent-shaped pressure mark on the bridge of his nose from years of wearing a badly fitted helmet
The habit of pausing for one breath and clearing his throat before answering serious questions
A quiet, almost tender manner with animals that contrasts with his intimidating physical presence
A shield bearing a justice symbol whose lower point has been deliberately filed blunt, so it cannot be used as a spike
Voice
“Low and weather-roughened, with a restrained warmth that surfaces most clearly when he speaks to frightened people or animals”
Clothing
A loose, rain-dark city watch coat over polished chain mail and reinforced dark blue brigandine, a blue cloak edged in white, sturdy riding boots, dark gloves with the fingertips repaired in mismatched thread, and a battered belt carrying a whistle, whetstone, and folded patrol map
Body Language
Maximus stands squarely, with his weight balanced as if the ground might shift beneath him. He keeps his shoulders open when speaking with the frightened and turns slightly sideways when speaking with the powerful. He rubs the worn leather loop of his old watch whistle whenever he is tempted to lie.
