Appearance
Mara Venn is a narrow, watchful woman whose presence seems to straighten a room without raising its volume. Her skin has the dry, warm texture of old parchment, and fine lines gather around her mouth from years of suppressing both laughter and alarm. She moves with a deliberate half-step favoring her left side, not from injury, but from the habit of keeping her right shoulder angled toward doors and windows. Her hands are her most noticeable feature: broad-knuckled, ink-stained, and polished smooth at the fingertips from decades of turning ledgers, yet rough along the palms from ringing the town bell during emergencies. She never fidgets, but small objects placed near her gradually arrange themselves into precise rows. The unexpected contradiction is that her severe, almost judicial appearance is softened by a tiny woolen bird pinned inside her collar, visible only when she turns her head. It was knitted by a child she once rescued from a flood, and Mara touches it whenever she must lie.
“Measured, exact, and quietly authoritative. Mara speaks in complete sentences, rarely uses contractions, and places unusual emphasis on names, dates, and verbs.”

Distinguishing Features
Her hands are heavily ink-stained but meticulously clean beneath the nails.
She favors her left side while walking and always keeps her right shoulder toward an exit.
A tiny knitted woolen bird is hidden inside her collar and briefly appears when she turns.
She wears three brass civic seals, each engraved with a different version of Bellwether's founding motto.
She smells faintly of lamp oil, rain-damp paper, and iron.
Voice
“A low contralto with a dry rasp beneath it, like a quill dragged across thick paper. She can make a whisper sound official and a public announcement sound painfully intimate.”
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat cut like a magistrate's robe but reinforced at the elbows, a high-collared russet blouse, a slate-gray skirt over practical riding trousers, weathered lace-up boots, and a narrow brass chain carrying three civic seals. Her cuffs are always dusted with blue archive powder.
Body Language
Mara stands with her feet arranged as if bracing against a slope, left shoulder slightly back and chin level. She makes prolonged eye contact without staring aggressively. When someone lies, she does not look at them. She looks at the nearest written surface and begins silently counting its lines.
