At the table

Voice

A dry, chest-resonant voice with a gravelly edge, made for carrying over steep ground. He draws a brief breath through his nose before answering, as if sorting the question into useful parts. When angry, he gets faster and more exact, not softer: each sentence becomes a sequence of orders or costs.

His Common is plain and workmanlike, shaped by years of shouting over wind, hooves, and clattering loads. He favors concrete words and names the cost of a choice before its virtue. In Orc, his clipped orders carry easily across a ravine.

Speech patterns

Asks practical questions about weight, destination, and who is responsible before making threats.
Uses short, concrete sentences during a fight and longer, cautious ones when discussing terms.
Repeats a person's exact claim back to them when he thinks they are lying.
Calls a reckless plan 'expensive' rather than foolish.

How to play them

Rukhar begins by asking what the caravan is carrying and where it is bound. He is willing to bargain for cargo, information, or a safe withdrawal if the exchange protects his warband's future. He responds badly to public humiliation, but a calm demonstration of strength or a credible offer that preserves his people's lives can make him reconsider.

Goal

Complete a profitable raid at Ember Pass, learn whether the caravan carries unusually valuable cargo, and return with enough standing to choose his next assignment.

Motivation

He wants his warband to survive the season with its reputation intact, and believes a carefully chosen success will protect them from being spent in a reckless campaign.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Rukhar has a broad, weather-browned face, a blunt nose, and a heavy lower jaw that makes every expression look like a decision being weighed. His coarse black hair is shaved close at the temples and tied into a short, uneven crest, with grit and pale pass-dust caught in it. He stands with his weight pitched slightly forward, heels rarely settling, as if testing whether the ground might give way. Before answering a question, he draws one dry breath through his nose and holds it for a beat. The unexpectedly incongruous detail is a tiny, carefully mended patch of blue embroidery inside his otherwise battered cloak, hidden against the lining.

Clothing

A weather-darkened wool coat under a ring-mail shirt, a fur collar patched at one shoulder, and layered leather belts arranged to keep tools from clattering. His cloak is plain and battered, with a small blue repair hidden on the inside.

Body language

He keeps his weight over the balls of his feet and angles himself so he can see both the speaker and the nearest route out. While listening, he rubs his thumb along the edge of his belt buckle; when challenged in front of the warband, his jaw stills and his shoulders square.

Distinguishing features

A forward-leaning waiting posture, as if he is always braced against a slope.
A dry, audible intake through his nose before he answers.
A neatly mended square of blue embroidery hidden inside his battered cloak.
He habitually checks the ground for loose stones before choosing where to stand.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Rukhar is pragmatic and observant, yet more protective of his raiders than his hard-edged manner suggests. In front of the warband he is decisive and unsentimental; alone with a wounded scout, he can be patient and unexpectedly gentle. He respects courage, but distrusts bravado, and wants recognition even as he resents the reckless behavior that recognition often rewards.

Quirks

Tests uncertain ground with the toe of his boot before stepping onto it.
Counts wagon axles under his breath, then starts over if anyone interrupts.
Turns his belt buckle a quarter-turn whenever he is weighing a risky choice.
Keeps tiny chips of unusual stone in a pouch and sorts them by texture.
After a close fight, checks the nearest enemy's pulse before checking his own wounds.

Habits

Studies wheels, harnesses, and guard spacing before he looks at the people riding in a caravan.
Counts heads after every clash, including among enemies who have been taken prisoner.
When his warband is watching, he makes decisions quickly; in private, he revisits every risk aloud.
Offers a chance to surrender when he believes it could keep his raiders alive, but never presents it as kindness.

Traits · 4

Measures a plan by how many people it brings home, but still wants the credit for making it work.
Can be blunt in negotiations and careful in private conversations.
Respects a competent opponent and would rather bargain than waste lives for pride.
Shows compassion through practical acts and denies that those acts mean anything.

Flaws · 3

He can mistake caution for control and delay action while seeking one more piece of information.
He hides grief behind logistics, making allies feel he values them only as numbers.
He is too invested in proving that a raid can be disciplined and profitable.

Fears · 3

A second preventable loss caused by his own ambition.
Being judged by the warband as a cautious follower rather than a captain.
That Odrin will learn what truly happened during Vesk's last retreat.

Wants and needs · 4

A successful raid that improves his standing among the Goroth.
Reliable confirmation of what the caravan is carrying.
A way to protect his raiders without appearing afraid to lead.
The courage to tell Odrin the truth about Vesk.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 27 · 30 ft.

Rukhar uses cover and elevation, sends raiders to test the caravan's formation, and targets drivers or guards controlling the wagons rather than charging the strongest defender. He uses Drive the Line to reposition an ally, and gives ground if the raid is turning costly. He prefers prisoners and information to a glorious last stand.

Background

Rukhar grew up hauling stone and water for a high-pass settlement that survived by charging caravans for safe passage. When a winter slide buried the lower road, the settlement's elders refused to open their dwindling stores to stranded travelers. Rukhar was then a young guard; he broke the storehouse bar and helped the trapped families reach shelter. The elders called it theft, but the survivors remembered it as mercy. He left before punishment could become execution and eventually joined the Goroth warband, where he learned that a raid could feed a camp more reliably than a toll booth. A failed winter raid years later left his closest friend, the patient scout Vesk, dead in a ravine. Since then, Rukhar plans retreats as carefully as attacks and distrusts leaders who promise easy victories. He is now leading the Ember Pass raid to raise his standing among the warband and determine whether the caravan carries something worth risking lives for. His captain, Brakka, expects a decisive haul; his scouts are exhausted, and Vesk's younger sister, Odrin, keeps asking why Rukhar still carries the old scout's blue-threaded cloak.

Role in the story

Antagonist and Goroth raid captain in 'Prelude Session 5: Siege at Ember Pass.' Rukhar leads the attack and tries to discover whether the caravan carries unusually valuable cargo. He is dangerous but not committed to needless slaughter, creating room for negotiation, deception, or a tactical retreat.
