Vesper bint-Kian
Canal Runner Captain
Vesper bint-Kian
Species
Human
Appearance
Vesper looks carved from old ship timber and river stone, all hard angles, rope-burned hands, and a left shoulder that sits slightly lower than the right. Her movements are unnervingly quiet for someone so solidly built. She walks as if every floor might suddenly become water, placing each foot with deliberate pressure before committing her weight. Her face is crosshatched with pale scars, including one that splits her lower lip and gives her resting expression the appearance of a crooked smile. Her most unsettling feature is her immaculate, delicate fingernails, which she oils and buffs despite the grime, blood, and rust that otherwise cling to her. She leaves people with the impression that they have just been measured for a coffin or a uniform.
“Low, dry, and economical, with a rasp like a rope dragged over stone. She pauses before names, as though deciding whether each person has earned the right to hear theirs spoken.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale scar crosses her lower lip and makes every smile look crooked.
Her left ear is missing its upper rim, replaced by a tiny copper hook.
Her fingertips are permanently darkened by alchemical silt.
She wears a brass floodgate key around her neck that cannot open any known lock.
Her limp vanishes underwater.
Voice
“A low contralto with a wet-stone rasp, usually quiet enough to make others lower their voices in response.”
Clothing
A sleeveless black canal coat treated with wax and fish oil, layered over patched gray wrappings and a red sash bearing the broken-circle mark of the Silt Cathedral. Her boots are soft-soled and split at the heel for climbing wet stone. Beneath the coat she wears a harness of copper hooks, glass ampoules, folded maps, and waterproof charcoal tablets.
Body Language
Vesper keeps her chin slightly lowered, watching through her brows as though looking along the surface of dark water. She taps two fingers against her thigh when calculating danger, touches doorframes before entering, and stands close enough to trusted people that her shoulder brushes theirs. When angry, she becomes completely still except for the slow polishing of one fingernail.
