Orin Vane
Species
Brass Dragonborn
Appearance
Orin Vane is a broad-shouldered brass dragonborn whose weathered scales have the dull, brushed texture of old courthouse plaques, brightening to a muted gold along his knuckles and jaw. He moves with surprising quiet for someone so large, placing each step as carefully as if crossing a sleeping courtroom. His amber eyes are sharp and constantly attentive, flicking between hands, exits, witnesses, and written seals. He smells faintly of hot metal, cedar dust, lamp oil, and the bitter mint lozenges he chews during long hearings. He does not seem aware of the smell. His most unexpected feature is his laugh: soft, dry, and almost dainty, completely at odds with his imposing frame and deep voice. It often makes pompous magistrates more nervous than a shouted threat.
“His voice is deep, resonant, and measured, carrying easily beneath the Basilica's open porticos. He speaks with careful legal precision, rarely using an absolute when 'on the present evidence' will do.”

Distinguishing Features
His brass scales are matte and weathered rather than gleaming, with pale gold ridges across his brow and forearms.
A tiny bronze bell hangs inside his legal satchel and rings whenever the bag is opened, though Orin insists it is only a filing aid.
He smells of hot metal, cedar dust, lamp oil, and bitter mint.
He unconsciously aligns papers, cups, weapons, and books into exact parallel rows.
His quiet, almost delicate laugh is startlingly unlike his imposing body and resonant voice.
Voice
“A low bronze resonance with a dry, almost delicate laugh. In crowded halls, his voice seems to settle over people rather than cut through them.”
Clothing
Neat, well-traveled scholarly robes of dark blue wool over practical polished chainmail, fastened with a bronze sunburst clasp. He carries a stout wooden legal satchel and keeps a thick leather-bound volume of regional treaties tucked beneath one arm.
Body Language
Orin squares his shoulders when challenged, but never raises his chin. He touches the bronze clasp of his satchel whenever someone mentions his father. During arguments, he slowly aligns nearby objects with the edge of a table. When genuinely angry, he becomes perfectly still except for a faint ember-glow between his teeth.
