Jarek "Iron-Wake" Vane
Species
Human
Appearance
Jarek is a powerfully built human man in his early fifties, with the compact, weather-hardened strength of someone shaped by years of hauling lines, climbing rigging, and fighting on pitching decks. His deeply tanned skin is crosshatched with wind cracks and old salt burns. A thick beard, once black, has gone almost entirely white at the chin and along the jaw, where it clumps into stiff briny points after a watch at sea. His sharp gray eyes constantly track movement, even during conversation, giving the unsettling impression that he is measuring every person as a possible wave, weapon, or betrayal. He moves with a rolling sailor's gait on solid ground, yet becomes unnervingly graceful aboard ship, sliding around obstacles as if the deck were already tilting beneath him. His right arm bears jagged kelp-burn scars that twist from wrist to shoulder like blackened roots. The contradictory detail is his hands: huge, cracked, and scarred, but unexpectedly delicate when repairing a child's toy, tying a sailor's bandage, or handling a wounded seabird.
“A gravelly baritone that carries across a storm deck without seeming loud. He speaks quickly when issuing commands, slowly when threatening someone, and with surprising softness when addressing children or the wounded.”

Distinguishing Features
Salt-whitened beard with a single black braid tied in red thread
Jagged kelp-burn scars covering the entire right arm
Sharp gray eyes that rarely remain fixed on the person speaking
A brass tooth engraved with a tiny wave pattern
A slight limp that vanishes whenever he steps onto a ship's deck
Voice
“A low, rasping maritime baritone with a dry, theatrical edge. His laughter sounds like a loose chain dragged across a deck.”
Clothing
A heavy black leather captain's coat, stiff with brine and lined with dark seal fur, worn over a faded crimson sash and a reinforced canvas shirt. Brass buckles, dull from salt exposure, secure his baldric, pistol bandolier, and boarding harness. His sea boots are patched with whale hide, and one glove is made from the sailcloth of his first command.
Body Language
Jarek stands with his shoulders angled as if bracing against a crosswind. He rests one thumb against the guard of his cutlass when suspicious, rolls his scarred right shoulder when discussing the drowned ruin, and leans close during threats while keeping his voice low. Around frightened civilians, his posture softens and his hands remain visibly open.
