Dain Prys is a compact, carefully groomed man whose presence feels more exact than imposing. His beard is trimmed to a narrow gray wedge, his dark hair is oiled flat behind his ears, and every visible thread of him appears measured. His hands are the first thing people notice: broad-knuckled, ink-stained, and ridged with tiny white calluses from decades of counting coins, sharpening quills, and sorting rough woodland scrip. He moves with a peculiar economy, never reaching when he can angle, slide, or beckon. His clothes suggest austerity, yet his cuffs are lined with astonishingly fine green silk. The contradictory impression is immediate: he looks like a severe clerk who has somehow learned to inhabit a palace as if it were a battlefield.

Dain stands very still while others speak, lightly touching his signet ring with the middle finger of his left hand. When deciding whether someone is useful, he tilts his head a fraction to the right. He rarely points. Instead, he places objects precisely where he wants attention to go.
