When he laughs, his broad front teeth show a narrow gap, and he chews slowly with his jaw working side to side, like he is testing a stave for a weak spot. His hands are rough and resin-stained. He leaves the impression of someone who notices what is loose before it breaks.

Yarik is observant and cautious with strangers, yet unexpectedly generous when he sees someone doing honest work. He is proud of his craft but not eager to boast; when customers question his judgment he becomes clipped and defensive, then later returns with a practical compromise. In a relaxed mood he trades dry jokes, while under pressure he becomes methodical and hard to distract.

Yarik learned cooperage from his father, who taught him that a barrel could tell you how it had been made if you listened while it filled. When a flood damaged the lower street eight years ago, Yarik spent three nights helping neighbors move grain and patch leaking casks. His father was swept from a footbridge during the same flood and was never found. Since then, Yarik has kept the shop running and quietly repaired containers for families who cannot afford new ones. He is close to Mela, the careful keeper of the town's communal well, who sends him work when water barrels split. His current problem is a run of warped oak staves from his usual supplier: he suspects the timber was stored wet, but cannot afford to reject the whole delivery. Two traveling adventurers might earn his trust by helping him inspect the wood, or by paying fairly and keeping a small promise without being asked twice.
