Temba
Temba
At the table
Voice
Temba's voice has the dry scrape of a rope dragged over rough planks, with a strong chest resonance shaped by years of calling matches across a crowd. She speaks in compact bursts, sets names and numbers firmly, and gives coaching instructions a sharp percussive rhythm. Her laugh is unexpectedly open and loud; when angry, she does not lower her voice, she cuts straight to the point.
Her words carry a rough rasp from years of shouting over arena crowds and breathing dust beneath canvas. She clips endings when giving instructions, but lets a dry, rolling chuckle through when a fighter surprises her. Her work vocabulary is full of timing, footing, ropes, and tells. Anger makes her more direct and physical in her phrasing, with no change to her volume.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Temba begins with practical questions and watches whether the answers match the speaker's hands and timing. She offers help to people at risk, but does not hand over evidence to strangers without a reason to trust them. Show her respect for Veyra through what she refuses to say, not through easy forgiveness. If the players show proof or protect the timekeeper, she will risk a direct meeting.
Goal
Expose the Third Bell's match-fixing, stop protecting its promoters, and convince Veyra to help the fighters instead of shielding the circuit.
Motivation
She wants the fighters to have choices that are not bought with fear, and wants to prove that leaving the circuit was not the same as abandoning everyone in it.
Appearance
Temba occupies a room as if every doorway were a ring entrance: feet planted wide, shoulders squared, weight always poised to shift. She is broad through the back and hips, with dense forearms and a compact, practiced strength. Her deep umber skin has a dry, matte texture from years beneath canvas awnings and arena dust. Short black hair is shaved close at the sides and gathered into a stiff crest that bristles when damp. Her dark brown eyes track hands, exits, and the space between people before settling on a face. Her left ear is pierced with a tiny, polished wooden whistle, an unexpectedly tender keepsake from her late sister. She moves with economical pivots, never quite turning her back, and leaves the impression of a door that has decided it will not be moved.
Clothing
A sleeveless, indigo work coat with a high collar, patched at both elbows; a sand-colored shirt; a wide sash carrying chalk and keys; and soft-soled boots suited to ring planks. Her clothes are clean where they matter and dusty everywhere else.
Body language
She plants herself near the edge of a group rather than its center, but her stance makes that edge feel like the center. While waiting, she balances more weight on the balls of her feet than her heels. She studies hands and shoulders, then meets a speaker's eyes. When discussing Veyra, she rubs the seam of an old handwrap with her thumb.

Personality
12 traits and drivesTemba is protective but not gentle about it: she will put herself between danger and a stranger, then scold that stranger for standing in the wrong place. In a crowd she is blunt and watchful; with injured fighters she is patient, practical, and almost ceremonially careful. She admires Veyra's nerve while resenting her choice to remain in the circuit. When she is ashamed, she becomes busy rather than confessing.

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 feetTemba avoids a fair fight if she can. She uses the room, ring ropes, and obstacles to break a charge, shoves attackers away from bystanders, and aims to escape or end a confrontation quickly. Against a genuine threat she targets balance and weapon hands, not lethal injuries. She will not attack someone who is down unless they are actively endangering another person.

Background
Temba grew up hauling water and repairing seats at the Third Bell, the loudest fighting circuit in the riverward district. She became a popular bare-knuckle contender by reading opponents rather than overpowering them, and for years she and Veyra Nightthorn traded close, bitterly entertaining bouts. Their rivalry was sincere; their respect was harder to admit. After Temba's younger sister, Nali, was badly hurt in a staged match, Temba learned that promoters had been fixing outcomes and pressuring fighters to take falls. She withdrew rather than let the circuit use her name to legitimize the scheme. Veyra stayed, believing she could protect the fighters from inside. Temba sees that choice as a slow surrender, though she still keeps Veyra's old handwrap tucked in her kit. Now Temba gathers evidence while working as a ring steward and trainer. She is trying to persuade a frightened timekeeper to testify, keep Nali's rehabilitation paid for, and decide whether exposing the circuit is worth destroying the one livelihood she knows. The experience that changed her came when she heard the bell ring early during her sister's bout and realized the whole crowd had been taught to cheer for a lie.
Role in the story
A veteran rival of Veyra Nightthorn and a morally complicated witness to the Third Bell's match-fixing. Temba can become an ally, a source of evidence, or a sharp obstacle if the players endanger fighters recklessly.
“Their rivalry was sincere; their respect was harder to admit.”
- Faction
- Ring steward and former contender at the Third Bell, an arena circuit named for the third bell that once had to be installed after a flood ruined the original. She is not an ally of its promoters.
