Appearance
Depot Marshal Julian Iron-Gate is a powerfully built human with the dense, work-hardened frame of someone who has hauled barricades, dragged wounded drivers from burning wagons, and slept in armor beneath overturned carts. His scalp is shaved to dark stubble, and his weather-beaten skin carries a permanent gray cast from years spent on ash roads and beneath volcanic stone. His knuckles are swollen and crosshatched with scars, while a pale burn-mark climbs from his left jaw to the hinge of his ear. He moves with an efficient, heavy stride, each step measured as if he is still crossing unstable ground. His face appears carved for disapproval, yet his hands are unexpectedly gentle when checking a cracked wheel, binding a wound, or lifting a frightened child over a barricade. The contradictory impression is unmistakable: Julian looks like a siege engine wearing a man's shape, but he treats broken tools as though they are injured animals.
“Low, clipped, and gravelly, with the measured rhythm of a shouted order reduced to conversational volume. He pauses before names, as if checking them against an internal manifest.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale burn scar runs from the left jaw to the ear.
His right index finger is permanently bent from an old wagon-axle injury.
The knuckles of both hands are heavily scarred and swollen.
A brass weigh-station key from his childhood hangs beneath his armor at his throat.
His armor bears dozens of tiny tally marks, one for every major convoy he escorted to safety.
Voice
“A deep, worn baritone that carries like a command through a warehouse. When speaking to frightened workers, he lowers it into something almost tender. When addressing corrupt officials, every word becomes polished and cutting.”
Clothing
Dark-gray military plate armor reinforced with visible chainmail links at the joints, its surfaces dulled by ash and repeatedly repaired with mismatched rivets. A heavy leather utility belt carries ring keys, signal flares, chalk, folded route maps, wax seals, a coil of cord, and a tactical signaling horn. His left pauldron bears the scratched insignia of the Grand Ledger Exchange, deliberately left unrepolished.
Body Language
Julian stands squarely, keeps his shoulders angled toward exits, and rarely sits with his back exposed. His scarred hands remain busy with keys, buckles, manifest seals, or bits of broken equipment. Anger makes him unnaturally still. Concern makes him touch the brass ring holding his father's old weigh-station key.
