Warden-General Silt-Carver Xylar
Warden-General Silt-Carver Xylar
At the table
“return with the map intact”
Voice
A dry, rasping buzz shaped by a broad chest and a lifetime of speaking through dust masks and tunnel echoes. Sibilants catch slightly, while hard consonants carry cleanly. Her name, Xylar, comes out with a crisp first click and a clipped final rasp.
She speaks in concise field phrases shaped by years of calling directions through echoing passages. Her Common is fluent but weighted toward words for stone, water, load, and distance. She rarely raises her volume; instead, she makes commands unmistakable by naming a person, a task, and a direction.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Xylar responds best to specific information, honest uncertainty, and people who treat local water knowledge as expertise. She offers guests a route map and a simple task before sharing sensitive findings. She challenges grand claims with practical questions, but will change her position when evidence is clear. If characters endanger a root chamber or conceal a likely blight exposure, she becomes direct and may restrict access until the danger is understood.
Goal
Trace the new pale marks to their source and contain the threat before it reaches a populated refuge or aquifer.
Motivation
Protect the Wardens' routes, the people who rely on them, and the water beneath Verdara, while proving that swift containment can serve communities rather than overrule them.
Appearance
Xylar's shell catches light in shifting petrol-blue, bronze, and bruised violet, its plates ridged like overlapping river stones. Damp mineral dust has polished the shell edges to a soft gleam, while pale root fibers cling around her joints. Her forearms are broad and densely plated; the tips of her working claws are blunt and chalk-scuffed from testing stone seams. She moves with a controlled, many-legged glide, then stops so abruptly that loose grit keeps skittering past her. At first glance her silhouette is all weapon and armor. Then she produces a tiny clay whistle, painted with a smiling mushroom, and uses it to call lost juveniles back to camp.
Clothing
A dark, close-wrapped harness carries cord, pitons, chalk, and sealed sample tubes without catching on roots. She wears a weathered Warden mantle of layered barkcloth, marked with route symbols in clay pigment, and keeps a soft felt hood folded beneath her shell for sleeping near noisy water.
Body language
Her foreclaws tap a measured pattern against stone while she listens. When considering a risky proposal, she angles her head until one feeler almost touches the speaker. If convinced, she shifts her weight forward and begins moving before the conversation has fully ended.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesXylar is decisive in an emergency but careful with a living place; she will risk her own safety to stop a spreading threat, yet resists orders that treat a grove or settlement as expendable. With strangers she is clipped and observant. Among exhausted patrols she becomes dryly funny and quietly attentive, remembering who needs food, rest, or an easier watch. She dislikes being thanked for choices that left someone grieving.

AC 18 · HP 150 · 35 ft., climb 30 ft.Xylar scouts ahead, marks safe ground, and tries to begin a fight from cover. She opens with a spell or a prepared angle that divides the enemy, then uses her first-turn burst to remove a leader, lookout, or spellcaster. She avoids damaging water channels and load-bearing roots even under pressure. If an ally is endangered, she spends movement and reactions to reposition or extract them; if retreat is necessary, she lays covering terrain and leaves a clear route rather than making a last stand.

Background
Xylar began as a route-mapper and rescue runner for the Deep Root Wardens, a compact formed to guide root-tenders through dangerous caverns rather than rule them. During the Nine-Day Fall, her crew found pale growth spreading through a buried root chamber toward a refuge's water channels. Their leader ordered them to wait for confirmation. Xylar broke ranks, cut away the infected grove, and saved the refuge's water at the cost of destroying a living root-bed that several families considered sacred. She still carries the cut-marked survey stone from that chamber, and still believes she chose correctly. Her rise through the Wardens came through patient fieldwork, not a taste for command: she learned to read air currents by the tremble of feelers, find unstable ceilings by the taste of grit, and pull a team back before bravery turned into a second disaster. Now she coordinates active patrols against deep-crust blights and corrupted beasts. Her former mentor, Orenna Vale, argues that Xylar's rapid strikes hide the true scale of the danger. Xylar respects Orenna's caution, but worries each delay gives the blight time to reach another aquifer. Her current problem is a series of fresh pale marks found beyond the old sealed passages, where no Warden patrol admits to working.
Role in the story
A formidable ally, field commander, and potential source of conflict in Verdara's struggle against spreading leyline corruption. Xylar can lead characters through hazardous caverns, but her hidden sample and hard choices over containment may force them to decide whether speed, consent, or preservation comes first.

- Faction
- Warden-General of the Deep Root Wardens, the cavern guardians and subterranean root-tenders of Verdara. The Wardens began as a rescue compact, and Xylar still treats their authority as a duty to protect routes and water rather than a right to govern.
