Yezgret Dast
Yezgret Dast
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a slight rasp from years of speaking over wind and mill noise. Her breath catches faintly on words beginning with hard consonants, a habit from years of grinding herbs in a dusty workroom. When startled, she whistles before she speaks.
She speaks in compact, practical sentences, often turning a question into another question until she understands the problem. Her metaphors come from planting, rain, and tools. She is apt to say, "Let's see what the roots say," before checking a remedy.

How to play them
Yezgret is welcoming but observant. She asks what visitors need before discussing their business, offers a fair price for draughts, and is more generous with those who are injured or honest about being short of coin. Respect for her village earns trust; treating the shrine as a shop to be looted ends the conversation quickly.
Goal
Find the buried channel or another reliable source of clean water before the next planting season, without driving Tavi away with her worry.
Motivation
Keep Kettlebend healthy and independent, and give Tavi a chance at a wider life than she had.
Appearance
Yezgret has the compact, weather-shaped look of someone who has spent decades outdoors: wind has roughened her cheeks, and years of grinding roots have stained the creases of her palms a faint, permanent green. Her eyes keep slipping toward doorways, windows, and the hands of whoever is speaking, as if she is quietly counting exits and noticing who needs help. She moves with quick, economical steps, then plants her feet with surprising firmness when she has made up her mind. The unexpected thing about the shrine keeper is that she keeps a tiny tin whistle tucked into her sleeve and can coax it into a startlingly clear imitation of a blackbird.
Clothing
A faded russet work dress under a patched moss-brown apron, a wool shawl secured with a wooden pin, and mud-ready boots. Herb dust gathers in the apron seams; the cuffs are neatly mended.
Body language
She angles her body toward the nearest exit while giving people her full attention. When troubled, she rolls a dried herb between thumb and forefinger until it crumbles. When a decision is final, she sets both hands flat on the counter and holds eye contact.

Background
Yezgret was raised among tenant farmers at the edge of Kettlebend, a hamlet named for the sharp turn in the stream that runs past its fields. As a girl, she was quick to laugh and quicker to leave any task she found dull. That changed during the Year of Thin Rain, when a fever took her younger brother, Pask, while the nearest trained healer was days away. Yezgret learned remedies from the old shrine keeper, then stayed on after the village buried her brother and the keeper died. She now tends the modest shrine of a local harvest spirit and prepares simple healing draughts from garden herbs. She sells them to travelers at a fair price, but reserves a portion for villagers who cannot pay. She has an uneasy, affectionate friendship with Odrik, the miller, who thinks she should stop trying to solve everyone's troubles. Her practical apprentice, Tavi, wants to leave for a town and study medicine. Yezgret encourages the ambition and dreads the day it becomes real. Her immediate private problem has nothing to do with adventurers: the village well is turning brackish, and she suspects the stream has shifted into an old, buried channel.
