Appearance
Hrold Varn is a weather-beaten, slightly hunchbacked village man with the look of someone carved from old rootwood and bad moods. He moves with a grudging sideways sway, one shoulder always higher than the other, as if he is perpetually bracing against an invisible wind. His beard is wild and bushy, dark at the roots but shot through with iron-gray strands that catch the light like wire wool. He wears a simple wool cap pulled low, high leather boots polished only where the mud has failed to stick, and a patched brown coat that smells faintly of peat, ash, and saddle soap. The strange thing about him is that his left glove is embroidered with tiny bright flowers, delicate and careful, as if made by a tender hand he refuses to discuss.
“Gravelly, clipped, and dry, with a habit of muttering route details like insults. He speaks as though every extra word costs him coin, but his directions are exact enough to save lives.”

Distinguishing Features
A puckered scar hidden under the beard on his left jaw
A persistent wheeze that turns into a hacking cough in damp weather
One glove embroidered with tiny flowers
A small brass marsh-token tied to his cart handle
Boot soles packed with dry reeds to improve traction on slick ground
Voice
“A low rasp with a faint wheeze, like wind through reeds, often ending in a suspicious sniff or a dismissive grunt”
Clothing
A patched brown coat, faded gray trousers, high leather boots, wool cap, cracked belt pouch, and a soot-dark scarf wrapped loose around his neck
Body Language
He stands with a guarded stoop, one hand usually on his cart handle or lower back, and he squints as if the world owes him an explanation. When irritated, his beard bristles because he strokes it too hard. When worried, his feet angle toward the nearest road before his words do.
