Hesk Stone-Reader, Stationmaster of Narrow Mercy
Species
Goliath
Appearance
Hesk Stone-Reader is a weathered, stocky goliath man whose slate-grey skin resembles rough quarry stone veined with pale scars. His thick salt-and-pepper beard is braided with tiny copper washers, each one taken from a station repair he personally inspected. Deep-set eyes of cold blue-grey constantly move across walls, bridges, hinges, and ceiling seams, rarely resting on a speaker for more than a heartbeat. He moves with the careful, economical precision of someone walking beneath a cracked roof, yet when violence begins he becomes startlingly quick, snapping into motion with the abrupt force of a dropped gate. His hands are broad, callused, and permanently darkened by grease. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a massive, intimidating commander who handles fragile paper records with the tenderness of a priest tending sacred leaves.
“Low, dry, and economical. Hesk speaks as though every sentence must fit on a work order.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale diagonal scar crosses his left cheek and disappears beneath his beard.
The tips of his left two fingers are permanently blackened by old alchemical sealant.
Copper washers are braided into his beard as memorial tokens.
His brass-bound ledger is tucked under his left arm even while eating, sleeping, or fighting.
He has a faint, rhythmic tremor in his right hand whenever he hears timber cracking.
Voice
“A gravelly baritone with the resonance of a struck foundation stone. His normal volume is quiet enough that people must lean closer, but his emergency commands cut through wind, machinery, and panic like a bell.”
Clothing
A grease-stained leather quartermaster's jerkin lies over reinforced mail and a quilted dark-red gambeson. He wears fingerless wool gloves, iron-soled mountain boots, a weatherproof charcoal cloak clasped with a brass rivet, and a broad utility belt crowded with chalk, calipers, wedges, keys, twine, and miniature hammers.
Body Language
Hesk stands with his feet planted wide and his shoulders slightly hunched, as though expecting the ceiling to descend. He taps surfaces with two knuckles when thinking, angles his body between vulnerable workers and angry officials, and grips his ledger tighter whenever someone mentions the Collapse of Saint Vey's Switchback.
