Appearance
Sylvie is a small, watchful child who seems almost weightless when she moves. She walks with her heels barely touching the ground, stepping around frozen puddles and loose boards as if the earth might complain beneath her. Her face is narrow from too many missed meals, but her cheeks are usually red from windburn. A faint white crescent marks the skin beneath her left eye, resembling frost caught under the surface. She has dark, slightly tangled hair that lifts in still air whenever a storm is near. Her hands are rough, cracked, and perpetually cold, yet she handles feathers with the delicacy of a jeweler. The unexpected contradiction is her smile, which is broad, crooked, and startlingly warm when it appears, making her seem younger than she is for only a moment.
“Low and careful, with a slight rounded cadence. She speaks as though each sentence is a small object she must decide whether to hand over.”
Alignment
Distinguishing Features
A white crescent-shaped mark beneath her left eye.
A collection of carefully labeled bird feathers sewn into the lining of her coat.
A habit of looking upward whenever snow begins falling.
A small scar across her right thumb from the night her parents died.
Her shadow sometimes appears to lean into the wind before she does.
Voice
“A soft, husky child's voice with a slightly breathless quality, as though she is always listening to something beneath the conversation.”
Clothing
A patched brown wool coat several sizes too large, fastened with mismatched brass buttons; a faded green scarf knitted by Elswyth; wool stockings darned at both knees; soft leather boots stuffed with straw; and a narrow belt holding a tin cup, twine, and a cloth pouch of feathers.
Body Language
Sylvie keeps her shoulders slightly hunched against imagined weather and often stands with one foot turned toward the nearest exit. She tilts her head when adults change the subject. Her fingers rub the shaft of a feather when she is thinking, and she becomes very still when she senses something supernatural.
