Eshes Tavi
Eshes Tavi
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear rasp with a breathy onset, like air passing over kiln-fired clay. His consonants are precise, especially s and th sounds, and his voice carries easily across a courtyard without becoming a shout. Anger makes his phrasing more blunt and his breath more audible, not softer.
His words are shaped by a broad dragonborn jaw and years of calling corrections across a noisy courtyard. He speaks in short, balanced clauses, with crisp sibilants and a soft rasp from kiln dust he breathed as a child. Before answering, he draws a deliberate breath and makes a quiet double click in his throat. When teaching, he uses plain physical images; when troubled, he names facts instead of feelings.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers tea, a place to sit, and a direct question about what the visitor needs. He will help with practical problems before asking for a favor. If challenged, he accepts a controlled bout and states the rules clearly. He becomes firm when someone threatens students or bystanders, but does not punish honest fear or a sincere surrender.
Goal
Keep Reed-and-Bell House open, find the surviving witness from the Floodgate Riot, and give Toma a reason to choose his own path rather than inherit Eshes's regrets.
Motivation
To make restraint useful rather than merely virtuous, and to protect the people who trust him without making their choices for them.
Appearance
Eshes Tavi is a copper-scaled dragonborn whose overlapping scales have a dry, finely pebbled texture, like old roof tiles warmed by the sun. His blunt, powerful jaw is unusually broad, and two short tusk-like lower teeth show whenever he speaks; when he eats, he carefully turns each bite sideways to avoid catching them. He has no mane, only a row of small dark spines running from crown to nape. He moves with a grounded, economical glide, his long tail making tiny corrections before the rest of him turns. At first glance he seems carved for breaking boards; within a minute, people notice that he breathes in through his nose, pauses, then lets out a soft double click in his throat before answering. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny paper windmill tucked behind one horn and repairs it whenever it tears.
Clothing
A sleeveless, indigo training coat over a faded saffron wrap, both patched with neat, visible stitches. His wrists are bound in soft gray cloth, and he wears split-toe sandals suited to wet stone. A paper windmill peeks from behind his right horn.
Body language
He plants his feet as if listening through the floor. His tail follows his balance rather than his mood, except when he is restraining anger, when it draws a rigid line behind him. He meets a challenger squarely but angles his shoulders toward anyone who seems afraid.

Personality
14 traits and drivesHe is patient enough to let a frightened person find their words, yet impatient with people who use rules to disguise cruelty. - Lawful Neutral, though his idea of law is a promise kept rather than a rule obeyed.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 67 · 50 ft.He starts by moving between danger and bystanders, then uses quick unarmed strikes to test an opponent's balance. He saves Focus Points for a decisive Stunning Strike or an escape that prevents collateral harm. He redirects attacks toward empty space when possible, and uses Thunder Breath only when several foes threaten others or when a larger enemy blocks his students' retreat. If an opponent yields, he stops immediately.

Background
Eshes grew up carrying kiln bricks for his aunt Sela, a potter in a river town where dragonborn families were welcomed only when they were useful. He learned to fight after a tax collector's hired bruisers broke his cousin Paku's hands for refusing to surrender their family's kiln. At nineteen, he joined a traveling monastery and trained under Master Iru, who taught that restraint was not passivity but the discipline to choose what came next. The lesson became real during the Floodgate Riot: Eshes disarmed a panicked crowd without killing anyone, but his delay let a corrupt magistrate escape with the names of witnesses. He still believes restraint saved lives, yet he has never forgiven himself for the people who were later arrested. After Iru's death, Eshes became grand sifu of Reed-and-Bell House, a small school housed in a former ferry station. He sends money to Sela, exchanges blunt letters with Paku, and tries to keep his gifted student Toma from turning the school's teachings into a weapon for local strongman Boro. Now the landlord has threatened to sell the ferry station, and one of Eshes's old riot witnesses has returned with proof that the magistrate is still alive.
Role in the story
A principled teacher, local protector, and potential ally whose old act of mercy helped create a present danger. He can train the characters, shelter them, or ask them to find the witness whose testimony might save the school.
“He learned to fight after a tax collector's hired bruisers broke his cousin Paku's hands for refusing to surrender their family's kiln.”
- Faction
- Grand sifu of Reed-and-Bell House, a neighborhood martial arts school named for the ferry bell that rang during a flood and for the reeds that snagged its rescue ropes. The house has no formal ties to a larger order.
