Edrik Kest
Edrik Kest
At the table
“That went better than the river crossing.”
Voice
His voice has a dry, slightly grainy edge from years of calling orders through weather and wagon clatter. It carries without strain, with a steady, practical cadence and the occasional rough catch when he has been out in cold air. He speaks faster when planning a route and stops dead when someone mentions Gant Ford.
He speaks in practical, complete sentences, with a clipped rhythm shaped by years of giving instructions over rain, wagon noise, and shouted orders. His words are plain but not cold; he uses dry humor to ease tension, and pauses before answering questions about the retreat. He pronounces names carefully once he has learned them.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers straightforward help before asking for trust. He listens longer than he speaks, especially when someone is frightened or angry. He responds well to practical plans and honest admissions of uncertainty, but challenges anyone who treats other people's safety as expendable. If the party proves dependable, he shares his map and the little he knows about the magistrate.
Goal
Find out what happened to Toma Gresk and expose the magistrate's role in the road raids without putting his sister's ferry in danger.
Motivation
Protect people who are being treated as expendable, and make his old friend's disappearance mean something more than another forgotten casualty.
Appearance
Edrik Kest looks like a man built to stand in a doorway and make it seem narrower. His gait is a measured, heel-first hitch: he favors his left side slightly, not from injury but from years of carrying a shield on that arm, and he stops so abruptly that people sometimes take an extra step past him. His broad jaw shifts sideways when he chews, working food with the patient concentration of a millstone; when he laughs, his square teeth show in an unexpectedly wide, boyish grin. His beard is clipped short except for one stubborn bristle that always curls beneath his lower lip. He smells faintly of oiled leather, damp pine, and the peppered cheese he keeps in his coat. For a former infantryman, he has an unexpected habit of collecting tiny carved birds and arranging them by species on his windowsill.
Clothing
A charcoal wool shirt beneath a patched, dark green gambeson, iron-gray chain mail, and a weather-stained brown cloak fastened with a plain wooden clasp. His boots are carefully resoled, and a little carved bird is tucked into the cord around his wrist.
Body language
He plants his boots squarely, with his left shoulder subtly forward as if an invisible shield were always there. In conversation he tilts his head to listen, but his eyes keep marking doors, windows, and hands. When uneasy, he rubs the heel of his palm over the edge of his shield strap. His jaw works slowly when he is trying not to interrupt.

Background
Edrik grew up in a riverside hamlet where his mother kept a ferry and his father mended wooden tools. At nineteen he enlisted in the county levy, more interested in steady meals than glory. He spent twelve years escorting caravans and breaking up border skirmishes, learning that most fights begin with frightened people being told there is no other choice. During the disastrous winter retreat at Gant Ford, his captain ordered the soldiers to abandon a line of refugees to save the supply wagons. Edrik disobeyed, held a narrow crossing with six others, and got most of the families across. His closest friend, the scout Toma Gresk, was captured in the confusion and never found. Edrik left the levy with an honorable discharge and a strong distrust of clean, confident orders. Now he works as a caravan guard and occasional mediator near the ford, while quietly searching for Toma. His younger sister, Ilva, runs their mother's ferry and thinks he should stop risking his life for old debts. He has lately discovered that a local magistrate is selling advance warning of road raids to favored merchants, and his inquiries have made him unpopular with people who can afford to hire swords.
Role in the story
A battle-tested escort and reluctant investigator who can guide the party through local tensions, offer a grounded account of the old retreat, and become a steadfast ally or a complication if their plans put civilians at risk.
