Oluvainen Jangles
Clockwork Guardian
Oluvainen Jangles
Species
Mechanical monkey
Appearance
A little over two feet tall, Mr Jangles is a mechanical monkey built from polished brass plates, dark iron joints, and copper filaments that flex beneath his overlapping armor like tendons. Hundreds of tiny gears turn visibly behind narrow vents in his ribs, producing a warm scent of machine oil, orange peel, and old cedar. He knows about the oil, considers the citrus a mark of excellent maintenance, and is completely unaware that the cedar smell comes from the lining of his storage compartment. His eyebrows move independently, rising in theatrical disbelief or pinching together during inspection. One eye is a jeweller's lens that clicks through magnifications, while the other is a black glass aperture that reflects faces with unsettling clarity. His articulated tail curls and uncurls with its own impatient rhythm. Though built for nimble climbing, he walks with the stiff dignity of a retired magistrate, creating the contradictory impression of a toy that expects to be obeyed by soldiers.
“Precise, formal, and lightly theatrical, with carefully chosen pauses. Mr Jangles speaks as though dictating a report to an unseen committee, but his sentences become quick and breathless when discussing mechanisms, trespassers, or Master Veyran.”

Distinguishing Features
A warm smell of machine oil, orange peel, and cedar follows him within a few steps.
His jeweller's lens clicks through magnifications whenever he studies a person or object.
His articulated tail taps out fragments of old marching songs against nearby surfaces.
The left pocket of his burgundy waistcoat is polished smooth from constant nervous rubbing.
His expressive brass eyebrows can move independently, often contradicting his spoken words.
Voice
“A bright, dry contralto produced through a vibrating brass reed, with a faint chime beneath each word. When angry, the voice becomes unnervingly calm. When delighted, several internal gears audibly accelerate.”
Clothing
A faded burgundy waistcoat tailored around his brass torso, fastened with mismatched silver buttons. A narrow black cravat is tucked beneath his jaw, and a miniature messenger's satchel hangs across his chest. The waistcoat's left pocket is polished nearly smooth where Mr Jangles rubs it during difficult decisions.
Body Language
His tail telegraphs his mood before his voice does, curling high when intrigued, lashing in short metallic taps when irritated, and wrapping around his ankle when frightened. His jeweller's lens clicks through magnification whenever someone lies. He bows with excessive ceremony, then cranes forward abruptly to examine the speaker's pockets.
