Wulfstan
Wulfstan
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge, like wool dragged over rough wood, with the breathy catch of someone accustomed to cold air and long days of work. It carries plainly across a room without booming. When distressed, he gets more concrete and names tasks, people, and places instead of speaking in abstractions.
He speaks in compact, plain sentences shaped by manual work and crisis decisions. He tends to ask one useful question at a time and leaves a beat for the answer. His Wessex roots show in a few old turns of phrase, but he does not perform an accent for effect.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him with directness and give him a practical problem to solve. He responds well to people who accept help without treating it as a debt, and he respects clear boundaries. Do not mistake his patience for agreement; he will name disrespect plainly.
Goal
Find a reliable lead to his former family and friends while helping the Seven at the Hearth remain a fellowship of equals rather than a household built around his protection.
Motivation
To preserve the Hearth without becoming its owner, and to keep hope alive for the people he lost.
Appearance
A young man from Wessex, unmistakably distinct from Eadric: Wulfstan is long-faced and broad through the shoulders, with a watchful stillness that makes him seem to occupy more room than he does. His winter-pale skin has the faint, dry look of cold porcelain, and warm air catches in a small plume at his lips. He smells unmistakably of woodsmoke, wool, and the sharp herbal soap he scrubs into his hands after work. His most unexpected detail is a carefully kept little garden of mint and feverfew in a cracked cooking pot; he knows the herbs by touch and tends them with the same attention he gives a barricade.
Clothing
A patched brown wool tunic, a smoke-dark cloak, plain trousers, and boots repaired at the toes. His belt carries a small whetstone, a bone comb, and a pouch of soap. He keeps his clothes serviceable rather than handsome.
Body language
He plants his feet squarely and leaves a little more space around himself than a crowded room requires. When he mediates, he turns his shoulders toward whoever is speaking and keeps his hands open. His gaze goes to exits and stores of food without seeming to, and when his territorial instincts rise, one hand closes around the nearest doorframe or pack strap.

13 traits and drivesDirect and patient when a crisis needs steady hands, but unexpectedly tender about ordinary comforts. He is willing to do unpleasant practical work, though he dislikes being taken for granted. He offers guidance without wanting to become anyone's permanent guardian.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 6 · 30 ft.At level 0, Wulfstan is no trained hero. He tries to keep a fight away from the group's vulnerable members, calls out a clear retreat route, and uses his walking stick only to buy space. He bargains or intervenes before violence when that can work. He does not pursue fleeing foes.

Background
Before the displacement, Wulfstan had a home, work, and a family whose ordinary habits he can still recall in painful detail. He was one of the first four men to gather with the Seven at the Hearth, a tiny survivor-circle that became part mutual-aid fellowship, part improvised adventuring party. The new life did not make him their father or their keeper; he insists that they are people choosing to stand together, not dependents under his charge. When two newly male members were bewildered by shaving and unfamiliar bodily routines, he showed them how to avoid cuts and irritation without making a spectacle of it. Later, when awkwardness around the group's sole woman crossed into disrespect, he corrected them plainly and expected them to do better. A formative crisis came when a winter shelter was nearly lost because everyone argued over who should take the dangerous watch. Wulfstan took it himself, then realized that practical competence could become a way of claiming authority nobody had granted him. Now he mediates disputes, keeps an eye on the group's dwindling supplies, and searches for any trace of the family and friends he left behind. His emerging White Dragon heritage frightens him most when he catches himself thinking of the group's shelter as territory.
Role in the story
A grounded early member of the Seven at the Hearth, offering the party an example of care that does not demand obedience. His unresolved grief and emerging territorial instincts can test the group's boundaries without making him a secret villain.
“Later, when awkwardness around the group's sole woman crossed into disrespect, he corrected them plainly and expected them to do better.”
