Veyrún
Veyrún
At the table
Voice
A clear, dry voice with a faint rasp, like bark rubbed smooth by years of rain. His breath carries the mint-and-soil scent of the mantle, and he articulates carefully, as though each word should be placed with the same care as a foot on a forest path.
He speaks in carefully shaped phrases, naming tangible details before drawing conclusions. Years of listening for small changes in wind and birdsong have made him pause at unexpected moments, as if waiting for the world to finish a sentence. When he is angry, his consonants become crisp and his pace quickens; he does not grow soft or quiet. His humor is dry and often arrives as a plain observation.

How to play them
Begin with a useful offer or a concrete question about what the characters need. Treat directness as a sign of respect, but do not confuse a confident claim with proof. If the characters show care for living things and accept responsibility for consequences, Veyrún will share more. If they threaten the grove, he gives one clear warning and then acts decisively.
Goal
Find a way to restore the grove's failing roots without sacrificing the memories or lives bound to them, then tell the settlement what his past choice cost.
Motivation
He wants to make repair possible without choosing whose lives or memories are expendable, and to prove that protecting people does not require deciding everything for them.
Appearance
Veyrún stands taller than most elves, long-limbed and upright, with a measured gait that seems to place his feet precisely between roots and stones. He favors his left side when turning, not from injury but from years of carrying a staff in his right hand. His robes are rich with texture: heavy emerald fabric, cool silver stitching, and raised embroidery of twisting branches, open flowers, and curling vines. A mantle of living leaves rests across his shoulders, its edges threaded with silver chains and tiny green gemstones. The leaves are always slightly damp and smell distinctly of crushed mint and rain-soaked soil, a scent he appears not to notice. His unexpectedly conspicuous habit of carrying a tiny painted wooden bird on a cord at his belt, polished bright with handling, makes him seem less austere than his ceremonial robes suggest. He moves with deliberate patience, yet his mantle stirs a heartbeat before he does, as if the plants around him anticipate his choices.
Clothing
Elaborate emerald robes embroidered in silver with twisting branches, blooming flowers, and curling vines. A mantle of living leaves lies across his shoulders, woven with fine silver chains and tiny gemstones. Beneath the robes he wears practical boots, close-fitting travel clothes, and a belt with weatherproof pouches.
Body language
He stands very straight but keeps his shoulders loose. His steps are long and quiet, with a slight preference for turning left. When listening, he holds perfectly still except for the living mantle, which shifts toward the speaker. He taps his staff twice against the ground before making a serious promise.

Personality
12 traits and drivesVeyrún is generous with labor and medicine, yet guarded with explanations. In calm company he is attentive and curious, asking about people's daily work as readily as their grand plans. Under pressure he becomes precise and procedural, sometimes so intent on preventing harm that he forgets to ask others what risks they are willing to take. When he is alone, he speaks to plants as if they are old witnesses and allows himself a dry, almost mischievous humor.

AC 17 · HP 153 · 30 ft.Veyrún prefers to shape the battlefield before dealing direct damage. He opens with control spells such as entangle, wall of thorns, or sleet storm, then uses call lightning or sunbeam against foes who remain exposed. He avoids killing when a foe can be restrained or driven away. If allies are threatened, he uses healing word, heal, or transport via plants to keep them in the fight or extract them. Against an overwhelming threat, he uses shapechange or wild shape to become a durable beast and protect the retreat.

Background
Veyrún grew up tending an ancient woodland nursery where each family cared for a patch of trees whose roots held the memories of their dead. He was a gifted keeper of plants but a poor keeper of boundaries: he let travelers rest in the grove, even when the elders warned that the road brought danger. When a fever swept through the nearby settlement, he secretly used the nursery's oldest tree to draw sickness from the children. The children survived, but the tree's roots blackened and the memories held within it began to unravel. That failure changed his idea of mercy. He still gives aid readily, but now weighs what it may cost others. He serves as an envoy and guardian for the Mallowmusk Keepers, a local band named for the pungent weed that overtakes every path in their valley. His niece Odelia, a practical ferrymaster, believes he is too willing to bargain with dangerous powers. His former apprentice Hareth left after Veyrún refused to burn a village orchard suspected of harboring a blight. Rival natural philosopher Yasmin argues that the blackened tree could be healed by studying the disease rather than sealing the grove. Veyrún is trying to keep the grove's failing roots alive while deciding whether the truth about the children and the tree should be told to the families.
