Species

Aerost

Appearance

Fendrel is a sharp-eyed Aerost with slender, light bones, broad shoulders, and flexible joints that let him fold himself into maintenance shafts meant for smaller workers. Storm-gray feathers lie in neat, wind-combed bands along his forearms, spine, calves, and cheeks. His avian profile is softened by a blunt, ink-stained beak ridge and expressive amber eyes that seem to measure angles even while he is listening. A short feathered crest rises like a row of signal pennants when he is excited and flattens into a severe aerodynamic ridge when he is angry. He moves with restless precision, making tiny balance corrections even while standing still. The unexpected contradiction is his hands: broad, scarred, and blunt-fingered, more suited to hauling cable than delicate drafting. Despite his severe appearance, he smells faintly of cinnamon oil and carries a tiny knitted sock for one of his relay spiders.

Height6 feet 1 inch
BuildSlender and long-limbed, with unusually broad shoulders, flexible joints, and a compact torso built for climbing ladders and squeezing through maintenance conduits.
EyesAmber with copper flecks
HairBlack-gray down feathers, with silver tips around the temples
SkinWarm gray-brown skin around the beak ridge, wrists, and talons

Rapid, clipped, and precise when excited, with sudden technical digressions and unfinished comparisons. His voice becomes soft and nearly musical when discussing signal patterns, while his formal reports are written in unnervingly elaborate legal language.”

Distinguishing Features

A short storm-gray feather crest that rises or flattens according to his mood.

A narrow burn scar crossing the left side of his beak ridge from the Northwind Watch-Spire collapse.

Amber eyes with tiny copper flecks that catch arc-light.

A three-beat tapping rhythm he unconsciously repeats on metal surfaces.

One mismatched wing feather, bright white and carefully polished, taken from his missing father's flight harness.

Voice

A bright, breathless tenor with a faint metallic rasp, as though every sentence has passed through a speaking tube.

Clothing

A charcoal engineer's coat reinforced with stitched basalt fiber, a weatherproof aeronautical harness, fingerless leather gloves, brass loupes on a hinged headband, signal-mirror brackets, insulated cable loops, and a heavy leather satchel stuffed with diagrams, calculations, spare lenses, and formal complaints.

Body Language

His crest and cheek feathers reveal his mood before his words do. He leans toward interesting problems, rocks subtly on his heels while calculating, and taps metal surfaces in repeating three-beat sequences. When frightened, he becomes perfectly still except for one trembling wing joint.
