Species

Appearance

Briska is a compact halfling woman with a round, cheerful face, broad hands, and the sturdy balance of someone accustomed to carrying trays across a crowded kitchen. Her copper-brown curls are pinned beneath a flour-stiffened kerchief, but several spring loose whenever she laughs. She moves with quick, soft-footed purpose, turning sideways through doorways and pivoting on the balls of her feet as though every room were a kitchen. She smells unmistakably of browned butter, yeast, and woodsmoke, though she insists the scent is merely the soap she uses. Her most unexpected feature is her solemn, almost scholarly expression when she decorates pastries, which makes her look like a stern magistrate judging tiny sugared roses.

SkinWarm russet-brown with a scattering of pale freckles across her nose and shoulders.

Briska speaks in a low, honeyed contralto with a faint hill-country lilt. She clips her words when irritated, stretches vowels when comforting someone, and speaks in a fast, breathy whisper when frightened.”

Distinguishing Features

Her unmistakable scent of browned butter, yeast, and woodsmoke follows her into every room.

She has a low, musical voice that turns into a rapid whisper when she is upset.

Her left thumb is permanently dusted white from a habit of rubbing flour into the skin while thinking.

She wears a brass wheat-sheaf pin that belonged to her mother.

Her smile is warm, but her eyes become intensely watchful whenever someone mentions grain prices.

Voice

A warm, low contralto with a faint Slavic hill-country lilt. It carries the softness of fresh bread until she is alarmed, when it narrows into a quick, breathy whisper.

Clothing

A moss-green wool dress beneath a cream apron embroidered with red thread. Her apron has deep pockets filled with twine, sugar crystals, dried herbs, and three wooden pastry stamps. She wears thick socks, polished ankle boots, and a kerchief held by a brass pin shaped like a wheat sheaf.

Body Language

Briska leans forward when listening, keeps one hand near a pocketful of sugar crystals, and constantly brushes invisible flour from her sleeves. When rattled, her breathing becomes shallow and audible through her nose, while her fingers begin shaping imaginary dough in the air.
