At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry, gravelly edge from salt air and shouting across docks, with a slight rasp that catches at the beginning of a sentence. He speaks from his chest without booming, and his breath often comes in through the nose before his first word.

Plain-spoken and concrete, shaped by years of giving instructions over wind, creaking timber, and rushing water. He favors short sentences when danger is near, but tells long, precise stories when repairing something with his hands. His jokes arrive dry and understated, often after everyone else has moved on.

Speech patterns

Starts with a direct question, then waits without filling the silence.
Uses worksite comparisons: 'That plan will hold like wet twine.'
Calls people by their job until he learns what name they prefer.
When embarrassed, changes the subject to weather, rope, or food.

How to play them

Begin with a practical offer of help or a straightforward question. He respects competence and calm honesty more than status. If approached with a threat, he places himself between the threat and anyone vulnerable, but gives the other party one clear chance to step back.

Goal

Prove who is stealing from the harbor before Dzelu's scapegoating sparks violence between the dock crews and riverfolk.

Motivation

To protect ordinary workers from being made expendable by people with titles, and to make one choice in his life without letting guilt make it for him.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Reko looks as if he has been built from dock pilings: compact, square through the shoulders, and held together by the practiced economy of a man who has hauled wet rope for decades. His skin is weather-browned, with pale salt tracks often dried at his temples. His dark hair is clipped close at the sides and stubbornly curls over his crown. He stands with his weight slightly forward, as if expecting a deck to roll beneath him, and lets his arms hang loose until there is work to do. Before speaking, he draws a short breath through his nose and gives one soft, dry click of his tongue. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny sprig of fresh mint tucked inside his breast pocket, carefully watered in a corked vial.

Clothing

A patched charcoal wool coat under a boiled-leather vest, tar-stained trousers, and heavy boots with replacement soles of mismatched leather. A faded green scarf is wrapped twice around his neck against river spray. His belt is plain, but the buckle has been polished smooth by years of use.

Body language

Waits with his weight on the balls of his feet and his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit. When listening, he turns one ear toward the speaker and keeps his hands still. He rubs his thumb over the worn edge of his shield when worried, then stops the instant he notices someone watching.

Counts the steps between a doorway and the nearest sturdy wall whenever he enters a new room.
Taps a mug twice on the table before drinking, a habit from testing whether a dock plank was secure.
Keeps mint alive in a pocket vial and replaces it every few days.
Uses bits of rope to mark his place in a book, then knots them differently depending on how much he likes the story.

Habits

Checks the footing of a room before choosing where to stand.
Takes the first watch when traveling, then insists someone else take the last.
When a worker is blamed, asks what the foreman told them before asking what they did.
If he cannot answer a question honestly, he offers a practical task instead.

Can become stubbornly protective and deny people the chance to take their own risks.
His guilt over Toma makes him slow to trust decisions made under pressure.

Being forced to choose between saving one person and many again.
That his sister will lose the quarry while he is away.
Discovering that the stolen cargo is being used to arm a coming attack on the riverfolk.

Background

Reko was born in the upland dwarf settlement of Kivak, where his family quarried slate and repaired mill races. As a young man, he left after a spring flood tore through the valley and carried away his younger brother, Toma. Reko had been ordered to hold a sluice gate; when it jammed, he chose to save two trapped workers instead of abandoning them to reach Toma. The workers lived. Toma did not. Reko still believes the choice was right, and still hates himself for making it. He found work in the river-port of Nambara, a name brought by the first boatwrights from a distant homeland and never changed to suit the local tongue. He became a dock guard, then a foreman, respected for settling disputes without drawing steel. He sends part of his wages to his widowed sister, Veli, who runs the family quarry, and trades letters with her through a traveling peddler. Lately, cargoes have gone missing from the wharves, and the harbor master, Dzelu, has ordered Reko to blame the riverfolk before an inquiry can expose the real thefts. Reko is quietly collecting evidence while trying to keep his crew from being used as muscle in a feud.

Role in the story

A grounded ally and witness who can guide the party through harbor politics. His evidence connects petty cargo theft to a larger plan to provoke a conflict, while his personal history makes the cost of inaction tangible.
