At the table

Voice

Her voice has a dry, grainy edge from years of shouting through damp stone corridors and breathing mineral dust. It carries well without becoming loud, with a slight catch on words that begin with hard K sounds. When she is angry, she gets faster and more explicit, listing consequences and measurements rather than lowering her voice.

Kett speaks in clipped, practical sentences shaped by years of calling instructions over rushing water. She names tools and measurements precisely, then uses plain, almost childlike words for grief. When startled, her first response is often a work order: 'Brace that,' or 'Keep back from the seam.'

Speech patterns

Uses precise work terms when nervous, explaining a crisis as if giving a maintenance report.
Asks people to repeat the last few words they said, buying time to decide whether to answer honestly.
Calls Drauvana by the childhood nickname 'Dru' only when she is frightened or deeply relieved.
Uses brief, practical questions instead of direct accusations.

How to play them

Kett is guarded with strangers but responds to specific, practical offers of help. Do not make her confess the full story immediately. If the party treats Drauvana's grief seriously, brings evidence about the aqueduct, or helps protect the lower wards, Kett may reveal that she is alive and ask for a face-to-face meeting with Drauvana.

Goal

Find reliable proof of who altered the eastern aqueduct and repair the route without depriving the lower wards of their current water supply.

Motivation

Kett wants to repair the damage she helped leave behind, protect the lower wards, and find a way to face Drauvana without making her choose between loyalty and the city's survival.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Kett has a compact, sturdy frame and the forward-tilted posture of someone who has spent years ducking under low stone arches. Her movements are economical until she hears water, when she turns her head sharply and goes very still, as if the sound has become a map. Her broad palms are crosshatched with pale, smooth patches where wet rope and stone have worn away her calluses; the nails are kept short and stained gray with mortar. One unexpectedly conspicuous detail: she wears a tiny, bright yellow child's mitten on a cord beneath her work shirt, an absurdly cheerful keepsake amid her grim tools. People often remember the little mitten before they remember her face.

Clothing

A patched, dark green work coat with a high collar, leather knee guards, a waxed canvas belt, and a hood that sheds spray. Her boots have soft soles for hearing changes in the stone underfoot. The small yellow mitten hangs hidden beneath her shirt.

Body language

Kett keeps her weight over the balls of her feet, favoring a slight sidestep when she turns so she can keep one shoulder near a wall. In open spaces she looks exposed and fidgety; in tunnels she becomes calm and almost unnervingly motionless. She rubs the edge of the mitten cord between thumb and forefinger when choosing whether to trust someone.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Kett is generous with effort but stingy with trust. She can be brisk and unsentimental while solving a practical problem, then unexpectedly tender toward anyone frightened or out of their depth. Under pressure she becomes exact and decisive; when asked about her own losses, she deflects with dry jokes or technical explanations. She wants to be forgiven but resents anyone who treats her as helpless.

Neutral good

Quirks

Taps a metal surface twice and waits for the echo before leaning on it.
Keeps a pocketful of smooth ceramic valve chips and sorts them by sound while thinking.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Counts aloud under her breath when crossing a bridge or narrow catwalk, but always skips the number seven.

Habits

Checks the nearest drain or watercourse whenever she enters an unfamiliar building.
Offers practical help before answering personal questions.
When a plan depends on a structure holding, she quietly tests it herself rather than trusting assurances.
If Drauvana is mentioned, Kett abruptly shifts to discussing the weather, water pressure, or anything else concrete.

Traits · 3

Will spend an hour repairing a stranger's broken water line, then refuse to explain where she slept last night.
Uses dry humor to defuse panic, but dislikes being teased about her own fear.
Can command a work crew without hesitation, yet struggles to ask one trusted person for a favor.

Flaws · 3

Treats silence as safer than asking for help, even when time matters.
Takes responsibility for dangerous repairs that should be shared.
Can become so focused on the practical consequences of a choice that she avoids facing its emotional cost.

Fears · 3

That Drauvana will learn Kett survived and conclude that she chose not to come back.
That exposing the diversion will leave the lower wards without water.
The muffled roar of water in a sealed, unlit space.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs proof strong enough to explain the diversion without exposing its beneficiaries to immediate punishment.
Wants to know whether Drauvana still keeps their old squad's brass whistle.
Needs one person she trusts to accompany her back into the eastern aqueduct.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 7 · 30 feet

Kett avoids a fair fight. She uses cover, narrow passages, and obstacles, trying to disable a weapon or create an escape route rather than injure an opponent. If Drauvana or a trapped worker is threatened, she will hold a choke point longer than is sensible. Her listed attacks are modest, appropriate to a level 0 civilian rather than a trained adventurer.

Aqueduct Warden's Instinct (custom): Kett can identify the direction of moving water, likely pressure points, and recent interference in a stone channel by listening for a minute.
Crowbar Leverage (custom): When using a bar or similar tool to force a stuck hatch, grate, or door, Kett has advantage on the ability check if she can brace herself against a solid surface.

Actions

Hammer. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Hand Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage. Kett carries only three bolts and prefers not to waste them.
Jam the Works. Kett wedges a pry bar into a nearby mechanism, loose stone, or door. One creature adjacent to the target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone by the shifting obstruction. This is a custom improvised action, not a spell.

Reactions

Slip to Cover. When a creature Kett can see hits her with a melee attack, she can use her reaction to move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, provided she can reach cover or a narrow passage. This is a custom defensive knack.

Services they sell

Can assess a canal, drain, pump, or aqueduct for blockages and structural danger.
Can guide people through familiar maintenance passages, provided the route is not actively flooded.
Can help brace a door, grate, or failing stone support with common tools.

Rewards they can give

A safe route through forgotten maintenance passages beneath the lower wards.
A fragment of the original aqueduct survey that may reveal hidden access points.
Kett's practical assistance with repairs, locks, and waterworks if the party earns her trust.

Equipment

  • Work hammer (tool and improvised weapon)A stout iron hammer with a flattened head, used for pegs, braces, and emergencies.

Background

Kett grew up in the damp lower wards with Drauvana, learning to swim in overflow basins and to tell a blocked channel from a healthy one by sound. As adults, they joined the municipal aqueduct squad together. Kett handled braces and access grates; Drauvana surveyed the upper runs. During the collapse at the old eastern aqueduct, Kett sent the rest of the squad back with a hand signal and stayed to hold a jammed sluice long enough for trapped workers to escape. The passage gave way before Drauvana could reach her. No body was recovered, and Drauvana has never declared Kett dead. Kett survived in a sealed maintenance pocket and eventually crawled out through a forgotten drainage spur, but she has stayed hidden since returning to the city. She discovered that the collapse was worsened by an unauthorized diversion, and that the diverted water now serves a district whose residents would suffer if the route were exposed. She is trying to find proof and a way to restore the aqueduct without cutting off the people who rely on it. She has not yet found the courage to face Drauvana, who may believe Kett abandoned the squad or died saving them.

Role in the story

A missing friend whose survival can turn Drauvana's unresolved grief into a difficult reunion. Kett also holds evidence of a civic conspiracy, but revealing it could deprive vulnerable residents of their water.
