At the table

“s anger breaks through, his sentences become blunt and declarative:”
From how they speak

Voice

Richard sounds as if his breath has to scrape its way past winter-dry lungs. His words come out measured and plainly spoken, with the exact timing of someone accustomed to presenting calculations. He rarely raises his volume; anger shows as a sharper attack on each consonant and a brief, electric catch in his breath.

His voice has a dry, breath-cooled rasp, shaped by travel in bitter weather and years of forcing his thoughts into exact figures. He clips unnecessary words, but gives dates and quantities with crisp precision. When he is angry, his jaw sets and his consonants become hard-edged; he does not soften his tone. At rare moments, a second cadence seems to ride beneath his words, like wind pushing through a narrow gap.

Speech patterns

Puts questions in the form of practical estimates: "How many came through? How long ago? What did they carry?"
States probabilities as if they were facts, then revises them without embarrassment when new evidence appears.
Avoids discussing his death by redirecting to dates, routes, or logistics.
When the spirit's anger breaks through, his sentences become blunt and declarative: "They took enough. Not this."

How to play them

Richard responds best to precise questions, useful information, and people who do not press him for a full confession. He offers practical help before emotional honesty and watches whether others keep their word. If someone mentions his adopted family or his death, he becomes guarded and changes the subject. A promise made in the spirit's name earns his immediate suspicion.

Goal

Find his birth father before the eagle spirit's influence turns the search into a slaughter.

Motivation

Richard wants to learn who his father is and why his family was lost to him. Beneath that search is a growing desire to make someone answer for the suffering carried in the eagle spirit's memories. He tells himself the spirit's power is a tool; the spirit believes Richard is its instrument.

Appearance

Richard looks like a young man dressed for a long, punishing winter: compact and still, with a face that seems too watchful for his age. His pale yellow eyes have a raptor's hard, measuring focus, and the skin around them is faintly roughened by wind and cold. His brown hair lies in uneven, practical layers beneath his hood. His jaw is broad and often held tight; when he eats, he chews slowly and deliberately, as if counting each bite. He walks with his weight centered and his head making small, birdlike turns toward every sound. People remember the way frost seems to gather at the edge of his breath, and the unexpected fact that he carries a pocket-sized slide rule and corrects arithmetic under his breath even in a fight.

Clothing

A dull charcoal parka over patched wool layers, insulated trousers, heavy boots, and a plain knit cap. Nothing is bright or ornamental. His gloves are worn at the fingertips, and his inner pockets are carefully arranged for a notebook, pencil, compass, and folded maps.

Body language

He holds his shoulders level and his chin slightly forward, as though facing wind that no one else can feel. His gaze snaps to motion before the rest of his face follows. When unsettled, his fingers tap out short sequences against his thigh; when the spirit presses close, every muscle goes rigid and his breath clouds.

Height
5 feet 10 inches
Build
Lean, close-muscled, and wiry rather than imposing; built for cold travel and sudden bursts of movement
Eyes
Pale yellow, like a bird of prey
Hair
Brown; before his return to life, he remembers it as blond
Skin
Pale, weather-roughened skin with a cold, faintly gray cast around the lips in winter
Age
Young adult, about 20
Gender
Male
Size
Medium

Distinguishing features

Pale yellow eyes with a narrow, predatory focus that seem to track motion independently of his expression.
His breath remains visible in mild weather, and his hands feel cold even through gloves.
The skin across his knuckles and nose is dry and wind-roughened, while his jaw works visibly whenever he is hungry.
A faint, branching mark like a feather split by lightning runs beneath the skin at the base of his throat; it brightens briefly when he calls on the storm.

Personality

17 traits and drives

Richard can be methodical and almost considerate when solving a practical problem, yet contemptuous of anyone who treats his pain as a curiosity. In calm moments he listens closely and admits uncertainty; when the spirit's memories rise, he becomes certain, severe, and eager to act. He wants to be judged by his choices, but resents anyone who asks what choices he made while dead.

Alignment
Neutral, pulled toward vengeance and increasingly at risk of becoming cruel

Quirks

He taps exact sequences of numbers against his thigh when waiting, then starts over if interrupted.
He tilts his head toward distant sounds and sometimes answers them before realizing no one else heard anything.
He turns every cup so its handle points toward the nearest exit.
He tests the air with one breath before entering unfamiliar buildings, as though weather could tell him who is inside.
He refuses to let anyone throw away a broken pencil until he has measured how much usable length remains.

Habits

Counts exits, windows, and nearby people as soon as he enters a room.
Uses statistics to calm himself, then becomes unnervingly decisive when a pattern suggests danger.
Keeps watch from elevated places when possible, even if it means standing on a chair or a snow-covered wall.
After using storm magic, presses his palm to his sternum as if checking whether his heart is still there.

Traits · 4

He offers useful help with no ceremony, then acts offended if thanked too warmly.
He is patient with honest confusion and merciless toward deliberate evasion.
He keeps his grief controlled through routines, but makes impulsive decisions when family is mentioned.
He admires courage and distrusts anyone who claims to have no fear.

Flaws · 4

He treats people as variables when frightened, which makes even sincere concern sound like calculation.
He confuses the spirit's memories of injustice with his own memories and can mistake inherited anger for personal knowledge.
He has abandoned people who love him rather than admit that he needs them.
The lower his health falls, the more difficult it becomes to distinguish a necessary fight from a chance to feed his rage.

Fears · 4

Finding his father and discovering that the man is kind, leaving Richard with no clean target for his anger.
Waking after a blood-hungry episode to find that the spirit chose the victim.
That the eagle does not want justice at all, only a vessel strong enough to enact its vengeance.
Forgetting the voices and faces of the family that raised him.

Wants and needs · 5

A credible lead on his birth father
Proof that the eagle spirit's memories are not the whole truth
A way to remain close to his adoptive family without surrendering the hunt
Someone willing to challenge his conclusions without treating him as a monster
A plan for the blood price before the spirit chooses who pays it

Combat

AC 15 · HP 44 · 30 ft.

Richard studies the field before committing, using cover and range to make opponents move where he wants them. He opens with a spear attack or Eagle's Claim, then uses Storm Pulse when enemies bunch together. He protects wounded allies if they are part of his plan, but his blood hunger can turn a controlled fight into a reckless pursuit when he is badly hurt.

Eagle Spirit (custom): Richard has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. He can see clearly in ordinary darkness out to 60 feet, but not through magical darkness.
Cold Heart (custom): Richard has resistance to cold damage. His body temperature is unnaturally low, and his breath fogs even in warm rooms.
Storm-Sign (custom): Within 30 feet of Richard, a Geiger counter clicks faster in proportion to his agitation. This is an eerie custom supernatural effect, not actual radiation.
Blood Hunger (custom): When Richard starts his turn with 15 hit points or fewer, he must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or use his action to move toward and make a melee attack against the nearest creature he can perceive. He can repeat the save at the end of each of his turns.
Spellcasting. Richard is a 5th-level custom storm-touched combatant. His spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save , to hit with spell attacks). He needs no components for his custom Storm Pulse ability.

Spells

Lightning Bolt (level 1, evocation). A 1st-level evocation spell from the D&D 5E rules. Richard releases a line of lightning in a 100-foot-long, 5-foot-wide line. Creatures in the line make a Dexterity saving throw, taking lightning damage on a failed save or half as much on a success. Richard can cast it once per long rest as a spirit-granted ability.
Gust of Wind (level 1, evocation). A 1st-level evocation spell from the D&D 5E rules. Richard creates a 20-foot-radius sphere of wind centered on a point he can see within range. The wind disperses gas or vapor and extinguishes unprotected flames; its other effects follow the spell description. He can cast it once per long rest.
Witch Bolt (level 2, evocation). A 2nd-level evocation spell from the D&D 5E rules. Richard strikes a point he can see within range with a bolt of lightning, dealing lightning damage to the target and potentially to a second creature within 5 feet, with Dexterity saves as described by the spell. He can cast it once per long rest.

Actions

Multiattack. Richard makes two attacks with his hunting spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () piercing damage, or 8 () piercing damage if used with two hands in melee. A thrown spear returns to his hand at the start of his next turn, a custom spirit effect.
Hunting Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () piercing damage, or 8 () piercing damage if used with two hands in melee.
Storm Pulse (Custom). Recharge 5–6. Richard releases a cracking burst of spirit-charged wind in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 () lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Unsecured objects rattle and lift; electronic instruments nearby may crackle or fail briefly at the DM's discretion.
Eagle's Claim (Custom). Richard fixes his pale eyes on one creature he can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of him until the end of Richard's next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this effect for 24 hours. Richard can use this once per short or long rest.

Reactions

Crosswind Flinch (Custom). When a creature Richard can see hits him with an attack, he can use his reaction to snap a gust across the attacker's face. The attacker must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn. Richard can use this reaction three times per long rest.

Background

Richard was born in North America to a family he remembers only in fragments: blue eyes in lamplight, a voice speaking across a table, and the smell of wet earth after rain. As a boy, he died far from them. The details are a locked room in his memory, and he refuses to say who was there or what happened. An eagle spirit found him at the edge of death. Richard surrendered his blue eyes in exchange for the spirit's sight and its mark; he woke with pale yellow eyes, brown hair, and a second presence behind his thoughts. His adopted family gave him shelter and a life, but as he neared adulthood the spirit's old grief began to surface in him as cold breath, a freezing heart, and nerves that snapped with lightning. He became a gifted statistical and mathematical analyst, first because numbers gave him reliable ground, then because patterns helped him trace the blood family he had lost. He left his adopted family bitterly, answering what he calls a hunt. Now in northern Europe, he follows scattered records toward his father while the eagle spirit urges him to claim power and avenge the suffering it remembers among peoples old and new in North America. Richard knows the spirit expects a blood price. He is not yet sure whose blood it means.

Role in the story

A dangerous ally and possible antagonist whose search for his father brings him into the party's path. Richard can provide sharp analysis, hard-won information, and storm power, but the eagle spirit's inherited vengeance threatens to make him the crisis the party must stop. His fate depends on whether he can separate justice from the spirit's hunger.

From their background
Faction
No formal faction. The eagle spirit's ancient claims and memories are the closest thing Richard has to an allegiance.

Known connections

His adoptive family, who gave him a home and now considers his departure a betrayal. He still carries an unsent letter addressed to them.
His unnamed birth father, whom Richard is searching for across the Atlantic. Richard does not know whether finding him will mean reunion, accusation, or violence.
The eagle spirit inside him, which gave him its eyes and mark and now feeds him images of old wrongs, storms, and vengeance.
An old family acquaintance in North America who once recognized Richard's childhood face in a photograph and may know more about his death than they admitted.
