Jekat Vossen
Jekat Vossen
At the table
“Hold still. Breathe in. Do not help me.”
Voice
A dry, lightly rasped voice shaped by incense smoke, dust, and years of calling instructions across crowded field hospitals. Her consonants are crisp and her pace measured. Before speaking, she draws a brief breath through her nose, as though checking the air for a familiar antiseptic smell. When angry, she becomes more exact rather than louder, naming the consequence of each choice without softening it.
She speaks in carefully separated clauses, with the clipped diction of someone accustomed to giving instructions over the noise of a battlefield. She rarely uses metaphor unless discussing ritual. Her speech has the dry rasp of years spent breathing incense, dust, and smoke; consonants land cleanly, and she takes one measured breath before answering. Under stress, her instructions become shorter and more physical: hold, turn, breathe, stay.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Jekat responds to distress with immediate triage, practical questions, and offers of treatment. She does not require worship or confession from patients. She negotiates with people who can help her secure medicine, burial salt, or access to the dead, but she refuses to disguise the cost of a ritual. If challenged, she listens closely, then asks what evidence would change the challenger's mind.
Goal
Find out why several preserved corpses have returned without memories, before the Ashen Watch decides to destroy them or exploit them.
Motivation
She wants death to be understood well enough that no one is abandoned to needless suffering, but her work increasingly tests whether understanding gives her any right to interfere.
Appearance
Jekat Vossen looks as if she has spent decades in rooms where everyone else is trying not to look. Pale, taut skin lies close over hollow cheeks, and her long silver-black hair is drawn into a braid so tight it seems to pull her expression into further severity. Her gray eyes track people with the steady focus of a surgeon counting breaths. Her jaw is broad at the hinge and narrows to a small, square chin; when she eats, she cuts every bite into exact pieces and chews with her lips parted just enough to show unusually even, blunt teeth. Her stillness is not statue-like: she shifts her weight with the economical sway of someone used to standing at a bedside for hours. A small, unexpected detail is her habit of carrying a folded paper kite, patched with burial-cloth scraps, in her breast pocket.
Clothing
Layered dark ceremonial robes under a reinforced leather-and-metal surgeon's apron. The apron is worn smooth at its edges and marked with old brown stains, candle wax, and faint lines of black thread. Bone clasps fasten the robe; surgical silver, ritual needles, stoppered vials, black thread, and folded burial cloth hang in tidy reach from her belt.
Body language
She stands with her feet planted as if bracing against a moving wagon, head slightly inclined toward whoever is speaking. Her hands make small, measured motions, pinching the air to mark a point or miming the placement of a stitch. Before she speaks, she takes one careful breath through her nose and touches the bone clasp at her throat. She rarely points; she lays a tool or palm beside the thing she wants someone to notice.

Personality
14 traits and drivesJekat is calm and methodical with the dying, but not emotionally cold: she remembers small preferences and notices who has been left alone. She is compassionate in the moment and severe about procedure, sometimes offering comfort with one hand while refusing a request with the other. Around patients she is patient and direct; among priests she can be stubbornly argumentative. When tired, her clinical precision becomes a shield and she begins speaking of people as cases.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 82 · 30 ft.Jekat tries to keep dangerous allies standing and make enemies spend actions escaping control effects. She opens with Spirit Guardians or Bestow Curse when surrounded, uses Bane or Blindness/Deafness to undermine threats, and reserves her reaction for Mortuary Clamp when a key ally would fall. She heals only when it changes the fight, often using Healing Word to restore an ally's turn. She avoids chasing foes and uses her staff only when cornered. Against undead, she prefers Turn Undead over destruction unless the creatures threaten patients.

Background
Born to a family of battlefield stretcher-bearers, Jekat learned early that the work after a battle could be more dangerous than the battle itself. As a young acolyte, she treated wounded soldiers in the flooded crypts beneath Crow Yard, a burial ground named for the birds that nested in its roof vents. During the retreat at Bracken Ford, her mentor, Oren, ordered her to abandon a line of dying soldiers so the living could escape. Jekat disobeyed and used a forbidden rite to slow the deaths of six patients long enough for rescue. One survived, a young courier named Tavi, who still sends her blunt little letters from the road. The rite saved lives, but it left Jekat convinced that the boundary between dying and dead could be handled like a wound, with skill and discipline. She rose in the Ashen Watch, where she now directs battlefield stabilization, corpse preservation, and soul rites. Her colleague Hedd, a practical undertaker, believes she has begun confusing care with ownership. A shortage of clean burial salt, a feud with the Watch's quartermaster, and a rash of corpses that return with no memories are consuming her attention. She has recently begun treating Ilyra as a patient rather than asking how she returned grievously wounded.
Role in the story
A composed and formidable ally who can stabilize a gravely wounded character, preserve the dead, and offer hard truths about the soul. Her connection to Nerull and willingness to manipulate the boundary of life and death can place her in conflict with the party, especially if her care begins to resemble possession.

- Faction
- High Mortuary of the Ashen Watch, a regional order devoted to battlefield care, burial rites, and the controlled study of death in Nerull's name.
