Nesta Blackreed
Species

Appearance
Nesta moves with the quiet balance of someone who has spent half her life on wet planks, shifting her weight before the deck can betray her. Her face is broad at the cheekbones and weathered around the mouth, with a deep scar crossing one eyebrow and ending in a pale hook beside her temple. Her hands are strong, square-knuckled, and permanently stained green-black from reed sap, though her fingernails are kept meticulously clean. She leaves behind the scent of river mud, lamp oil, and crushed mint. The unexpected softness of her appearance is a small brass bell braided into her hair, polished bright enough to catch sunlight, while the rest of her clothing resembles a dockworker's battered gear.
“Low, patient, and intimate, with a delta cadence that lengthens vowels at the end of warnings. She speaks softly enough that others lean closer, then chooses words sharp enough to make them wish they had not.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale hook-shaped scar runs from her left eyebrow to her temple.
A polished brass bell is braided into her dark hair and never seems to make a sound while she walks.
Her left thumb is missing its nail, a remnant of the peat-cut flood during the Night of Twelve Lanterns.
The inside of her coat bears twelve black lantern charms, each marked with a captain's name.
She carries a folded scrap of her father's ferry ledger inside a waterproof locket.
Voice
“A contralto softened by years of speaking over rain, river noise, and creaking hulls. Her laugh is unexpectedly bright, but it vanishes quickly when anyone notices it.”
Clothing
A dark green oilskin coat patched with sailcloth, layered over a russet linen shirt and a reinforced leather vest. Her trousers are tucked into knee-high river boots sealed with wax. A belt of brass hooks carries knives, chalk, keys, lock picks, and small glass vials of mint oil. Twelve tiny black lantern charms hang from the inside of her coat, one for each boat of the Compact's founding night.
Body Language
Nesta keeps her shoulders relaxed and her feet angled toward solid footing. She turns her head slowly rather than snapping her gaze, as if allowing every sound time to settle. When angered, she becomes almost tender in her movements, smoothing a sleeve or straightening a collar while deciding exactly how much damage to cause.
