Beni Dowlund
Beni Dowlund
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with rounded provincial vowels and a faint rasp from years spent in dust-filled crypts and observatories. Her words land with the measured cadence of a lecturer who expects to be understood, not admired. When amused, the breath behind her laugh catches audibly on her teeth.
She speaks in clean, compact sentences with the clipped precision of a court-trained scholar and the practical vocabulary of someone who has spent years repairing stonework and wards. Her old provincial vowels round certain words, especially names. When discussing magic, she becomes quick and technical; when speaking to the bereaved, she slows down and leaves room for answers. Her laughter is a short, dry burst that often reveals her canines.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Beni treats capable strangers as potential collaborators and asks what they need before she offers anything. She respects a firm refusal, though she will test whether it is informed. She prefers explicit bargains and will share useful information when doing so advances a mutual goal. If she senses someone is frightened, she gives them a practical choice rather than offering comfort she cannot guarantee.
Goal
Repair the failing observatory ward without sacrificing someone else's cherished memory, and prove to herself that preserving lives does not require owning them.
Motivation
She wants to protect people from the bargains and magical failures that once trapped her, while proving that her undeath has not made every act of care a form of possession.
Appearance
Beni is only 5 feet 3 inches tall, but she habitually occupies the space of someone much larger: she places herself at the center of a room, turns without yielding, and expects people to make room. Her complexion is pale with a faint blue cast, like porcelain kept in a cellar. Short, wavy black hair curls inward at the ends around her jaw. Her pale blue eyes are clear and watchful, with a glassy brightness that catches candlelight. Her jaw is compact and unusually strong; when she laughs, the upper canines show before the smile reaches her eyes. She eats with exacting manners, but tears meat cleanly with those teeth when she thinks no one is watching. A detail at odds with her fearsome reputation: she keeps a tiny folding paper menagerie in her sleeve and repairs the figures when nervous. She moves with the brisk, economical certainty of someone accustomed to having doors opened before she reaches them. People remember the polished stillness of her face, then the feeling that she had quietly claimed their chair, their conversation, and the best exit.
Clothing
A fitted, stylish gown of deep plum-black velvet, with a high collar, narrow sleeves, and subtle thorn-vine embroidery worked in dull pewter thread. The skirt is cut for quick movement rather than ceremony. She wears a narrow belt carrying spell components and a small, old-fashioned watch.
Body language
Beni holds her chin level and her shoulders squared, taking up the middle of a doorway as if she has not noticed anyone waiting behind her. Her hands are controlled and busy, smoothing a cuff or flattening a crease in the gown. When she is unsure, her jaw works once and she touches the pocket that holds her paper figures. She does not retreat when challenged, but makes a small, exact adjustment to her stance that quietly blocks the nearest route past her.

Personality
15 traits and drivesBeni is attentive to other people's needs but impatient with their indecision. She can be brisk and imperious in a crowded room, yet unexpectedly gentle with the sick and the bereaved. She enjoys clever company and has a dry, almost childish delight in small paper crafts. When afraid, she becomes more precise rather than more emotional, which can make her seem cold even when she is trying to keep everyone safe.

AC 17 · HP 180 · 30 ft., climb 30 ft.Beni begins by establishing distance and protection with wall of force, globe of invulnerability, or mirror image. She uses control spells to divide opponents, then targets their strongest combatant with disintegrate or forceful arcane attacks. She uses Counterspell and Shield to protect concentration and avoid wasting high-level magic on weak threats. If badly pressed, she teleports to a prepared position and lets her ward and regeneration buy time. She avoids feeding in battle unless a target is already subdued.

Background
Beni Dowlund was born to a family of provincial morticians who taught her that grief made people careless with details. She became a court wizard and specialized in protective magic, quietly preserving the bodies and belongings of the dead so their families could recognize them. During a winter siege, her younger brother Juma was trapped in a crypt with a fever and a wounded guard. Beni broke the crypt's wards to save them, and the breach let in a vampire who offered to preserve Juma's life in exchange for Beni's. The guard survived; Juma did not. Beni accepted the transformation anyway, and spent decades telling herself that she had made the only choice available. She later became an expert in abjuration and the magical architecture of tombs, partly to ensure no one else could exploit such a breach. Her current refuge is a sealed observatory above the town of Kest, named for the shrill kestrels that nest in every roof. Her former apprentice, Fadh, now repairs the warded doors there, while the stern exorcist Grit hunts her, convinced she has been feeding on the town. Beni secretly funds a hospice through the local Saffron Rain, a name borrowed from her family's homeland and plainly ill-suited to the dry uplands. Her most urgent problem is that the observatory's ancient ward is failing, and its repair requires a living memory from someone she loves.
