Jaluma
Jaluma
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a faint rasp from years of dust and shouted watch calls. Before difficult answers he draws one audible breath through his nose, as if testing the direction of the wind. His name, Jaluma, rolls out more openly than the rest of his deliberate speech.
He speaks in measured, practical clauses, with the clipped clarity of someone accustomed to calling warnings over market noise. His desert-road metaphors surface when he is trying to explain a hard choice. He leaves a small intake of breath before answering questions that touch his former service.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begins by offering useful information about routes, shelter, or local dangers. He respects directness and people who look after companions. If pressed about his dismissal, he gives a factual account without naming his suspicions until he has reason to trust the listener.
Goal
Find proof of the sold patrol schedules, clear the names of the guards who were blamed, and earn enough to bring his mother out of the crowded quarter if she will agree.
Motivation
He wants to make protection mean something again, without pretending that every order deserves obedience.
Appearance
Jaluma has deep coffee-brown skin with a sun-polished sheen across his forehead and nose, while wind and dry grit have left the backs of his hands finely rough. His full-body tattoo is made of thin, curling blue-black lines that stream over his scalp, neck, chest, arms, and legs like air currents around a mountain pass; viewed from a distance, the design seems to shift when he breathes. He walks with a measured, heel-light stride, turning his shoulders before his hips as if slipping between gusts. The unexpected detail is a tiny, painstakingly stitched patch of bright yellow flowers on the inside of his shield strap, hidden against his wrist.
Clothing
A sand-colored wrap shirt under a patched chain shirt, a faded indigo scarf, loose trousers tucked into weather-beaten boots, and a broad leather belt. His shield strap bears the concealed yellow-flower stitching.
Body language
He plants his feet as if bracing against a crosswind, but keeps his upper body loose and ready to turn. When wary, his thumb traces the shield's rim; when pleased, he tips his chin toward the person rather than smiling broadly.

Background
Jaluma grew up in a caravan quarter of Calimport, the child of a dyer and a water-carrier. As a young guard he was assigned to a narrow market gate where he learned to read crowds by their pauses and shifting weight. During a sandstorm, an order to keep the gate shut trapped a group of market children on the wrong side. Jaluma broke ranks and hauled them through a drainage arch, saving them but losing his post and the trust of his captain. One of those children, now a courier named Phaedra, still carries messages for him. The sweeping tattoo began as a family wind-map, inked by his mother to mark safe routes through the desert; Jaluma extended it after leaving the guard, adding paths he has walked and those he still hopes to find. He now escorts caravans and quietly searches for evidence that the captain who dismissed him sold gate schedules to raiders. He sends part of every fee to his mother, who refuses to leave the city.
