Master Verna Iron-Lock
Artificer (Battle Smith) 9 / Rogue 2
Master Verna Iron-Lock
Species
Mountain Dwarf
Appearance
Master Verna Iron-Lock is a broad-shouldered mountain dwarf woman built like a smithing anvil given legs. Her copper-red hair is divided into six thick braids, each interwoven with thin iron wire that glints whenever she moves. Her hands are heavily calloused, but her fingers are astonishingly delicate and steady, able to turn a hair-thin tumbler without disturbing a mote of dust. Bright steel-blue eyes stare without blinking into sparks, magical glare, or the open mouths of dangerous mechanisms. She walks with a compact, rolling stride that suggests both battlefield readiness and years spent squeezing through maintenance tunnels. Her usual impression is one of compressed industrial force: warm furnace heat held behind a locked door. The unexpected contradiction is her smile, which is soft, lopsided, and almost grandmotherly, despite the scarred knuckles, iron tools, and intimidating silence that precede it.
“Her voice is low, rough, and resonant, like gravel rolling inside a metal pipe. She speaks quickly when discussing mechanisms and slowly when delivering a warning.”

Distinguishing Features
Iron wire woven through six copper-red braids.
A narrow burn scar crossing the bridge of her nose, caused by a portal backlash.
A left thumb with a slightly flattened nail from years of testing spring-loaded traps.
One eye occasionally reflects tiny rotating cipher symbols when she is near unstable magic.
Her key ring contains one black key that never fits any known lock.
Brindle's head bears a small brass plaque engraved with Verna's handwriting: 'Do not let her pretend she is fine.'
Voice
“Low, rough, resonant, and unexpectedly gentle when speaking to frightened apprentices or injured animals.”
Clothing
A heavily reinforced charcoal leather technician's jerkin covers layered wool and fitted mail at the shoulders and ribs. It is stitched with copper wire, padded at the elbows, and crowded with lockpicks, diagnostic lenses, chalk capsules, tuning forks, miniature clamps, and a heavy-duty ring of customized skeleton keys. Her steel-capped boots have retractable climbing spurs, and a red sash marks her rank among the Cipher-Lock Wardens.
Body Language
Verna plants both feet before difficult conversations, rests one thumb against the largest key at her belt, and tilts her head toward mechanical sounds as if listening to a distant voice. In combat she becomes unnervingly still between movements, then explodes into precise bursts of motion.
