Species
Awakened Elder Tree
Appearance
Rusk resembles a tall, lean man carved from a living tree, with pale silver-brown bark stretched over a frame that is almost unnervingly human. His skin has the dry grain of weathered beech, but thin green lines pulse beneath it like sap-lit veins. Moss hangs from his jaw and chin in uneven curtains, soft and damp at the tips, giving him the look of an old hermit until he turns and reveals the hard, symmetrical face beneath. A thorny vine crown coils around his head, its thorns black as iron and its leaves dark emerald. Small jewels are embedded in the vine: river pearls, cloudy garnets, bits of amber, and one child's blue glass marble. His movements are slow until they are suddenly impossibly quick, like a tree swaying lazily before a branch snaps toward a trespasser. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of immense age paired with the shy uncertainty of someone who has only recently learned what it means to have a personal opinion.
“Measured and resonant, with a dry rasp like branches rubbing together. His voice seems to come from the surrounding trees as well as his mouth, and certain words arrive a heartbeat early from distant trunks.”

Distinguishing Features
A thorny vine crown contains several embedded jewels, including an unmistakable blue glass marble.
Moss grows naturally from his jaw and chin, but he trims it with a tiny silver sewing scissors.
A lightning scar splits the bark over his left shoulder and glows faintly during storms.
One of his fingers is made from blackened wood and cannot produce leaves.
His shadow sometimes shows branching antlers or spreading roots that are not present on his body.
Voice
“A low, weathered baritone that carries through wood and soil, sometimes layered with distant whispers from the forest.”
Clothing
Thin overlapping plates of pale bark form a simple armored coat across his chest, shoulders, hips, and forearms. The bark is polished at the edges and ridged at the center, resembling delicate ceremonial armor while possessing the hardness of tempered steel. A mantle of hanging lichen covers his back, and a braided root cord holds a cluster of keys, acorns, and old metal buttons at his waist.
Body Language
Rusk stands with his shoulders slightly bowed, as though trying not to block the sunlight from smaller plants. His fingers constantly flex like twigs seeking soil. When pleased, small leaves unfold along his forearms. When threatened, his head tilts toward sounds no one else can hear and the thorns of his crown slowly turn outward.
