Appearance
Nessa is a lean, weather-cut woman with deep brown skin, narrow shoulders, and the compact balance of someone raised on a pitching deck. Salt has roughened her knuckles and left pale lines across her forearms. Her black hair is shaved close on one side and gathered on the other into a rope-thin braid threaded with fishbone beads. Her eyes are a muted green-gray, watchful and almost painfully still. She moves with quiet economy, placing each foot as though the floor might tilt beneath her. The unexpected softness is her smile, which appears easily when children, injured animals, or frightened deckhands are near, making her seem warmer than the dangerous silence around her suggests.
“Low, breathy, and sibilant, with careful pauses. Her voice carries the soft rasp of rope through a pulley and the clipped precision of a sailor giving orders in a storm.”

Distinguishing Features
A thin white scar runs from the corner of her mouth to her jaw, left by a fishhook during the night of Edgard's murder.
One lower canine is capped with dull brass, an old Brandle Remnant signal visible only when she smiles.
Her left thumb bears a permanent blue-black stain from navigation ink.
She has a habit of smelling coins before accepting them, looking for oil, blood, or unfamiliar perfume.
Voice
“A hushed contralto, dry at the edges and almost soothing when she is most dangerous. She sounds like someone speaking beneath deck while rain drums overhead.”
Clothing
A faded indigo sailor's coat patched with sailcloth, soft gray trousers tucked into tar-dark boots, a sleeveless leather harness, and a red scarf worn beneath the collar. Every piece is repaired rather than replaced. The coat smells faintly of brine, lamp oil, and crushed bay leaves.
Body Language
Nessa keeps her shoulders lowered and her hands visible around Sablewing, performing harmless obedience. Away from authority, her posture lengthens and her head tilts toward every sound. When deciding whether to trust someone, she studies their hands before their face.
