Species

Appearance
Sam is a slight tiefling girl with rust-red skin that looks almost copper under lamplight. Her horns curl backward close to her skull like unfinished ram horns, their ridges polished smooth where she absentmindedly rubs them. She moves with a quick, side-stepping gait, always favoring her left foot because the right sole is thick with callus from climbing roofs barefoot. Her fingers are narrow and permanently darkened around the nails by soot, candle wax, and old berry ink. The first thing most people notice is her tail, which never quite stops moving. It hooks around chair legs, taps out rhythms, and occasionally steals food from a plate without Sam seeming to notice. Despite her devilish appearance and sharp little teeth, she has an unexpectedly solemn face when listening to prayers, as though she is the oldest person in the room.
“Quick, low, and slightly hoarse from whispering in alleys. Sam's words tumble out when excited, but become formal and carefully chosen when she is afraid.”

Distinguishing Features
Backward-curving ridged horns polished smooth by constant touching
A tail that taps, hooks, and steals with a life of its own
Soot-darkened fingertips and berry-ink stains around the nails
A habit of standing on the edges of her feet as though ready to run
A brass button sewn inside her coat, carried from the cloth she was abandoned in
Voice
“A husky child’s voice with a faint rasp, usually kept below conversational volume. When angry, it becomes startlingly clear and adult-sounding.”
Clothing
A patched brown temple tunic worn under an oversized blue-gray wool coat. Her sleeves are too long and hide several thin cords, a bent spoon, and a stolen brass key. She wears mismatched sandals tied with red thread and a faded scarf wrapped around her horns when she wants to pass unnoticed.
Body Language
Sam crouches rather than sits, keeps one shoulder near a wall, and constantly curls her tail around something stable. When she trusts someone, she leans against their knee without looking at them. When she lies, her left hand goes still while her tail becomes more active.
