Warden Captain

Balasar ibn-Marwan

0·Male·Medium
Lawful Neutral

Species

Dragonborn

Appearance

Balasar is a broad-shouldered dragonborn whose weather-scarred scales resemble dark bronze hammered thin by sandstorms and years of tunnel grit. Fine pale seams cross his left cheek and throat where a mining charge once burst behind him. His amber eyes remain unnervingly bright in darkness, fixed and measuring like lanterns behind smoked glass. He moves with the deliberate weight of a siege engine, each iron-soled step placed exactly where the stone is strongest, yet he can pivot with startling speed when violence begins. His armor makes him look like a walking barricade, but his hands are unexpectedly gentle when checking an injured guard or straightening a fallen market stall. He leaves behind the impression of heat, dust, and absolute inevitability.

Height7 feet 1 inch
BuildPowerfully muscled and broad through the chest, with the compact, load-bearing frame of a veteran tunnel laborer.

HairNone; short black bristles line the back of his skull and the roots of his horns
SkinDark bronze scales mottled with ash-gray scars and pale mineral flecks

Formal, clipped, and resonant, with the cadence of commands meant to travel through tunnels. He rarely uses contractions.”

Distinguishing Features

A jagged pale scar runs from his left jaw to the base of his throat.

Three small brass route rings are permanently fitted around the tip of his right horn.

His left wrist is slightly crooked from the Gate Nine collapse.

His tail bears painted white hash marks, one for every warden lost under his command.

His armor smells faintly of hot clay, lamp oil, and bitter orange peel.

Voice

A deep, booming baritone with a metallic undertone, capable of carrying through stone corridors without strain. In anger it does not become louder, it becomes flatter and more dangerous.

Clothing

Thick custom-fitted ceramic-composite armor plates cover his torso, shoulders, forearms, and thighs. The plates are blackened at the edges by old explosive impacts and marked with pale route symbols used by the Exchange's wardens. Beneath them he wears a sleeveless charcoal patrol coat, layered shock-padding, a red-brown utility sash, and heavy iron-soled boots designed to grip wet subterranean stone.

Body Language

Balasar stands squarely with his feet braced as if the ground might shift beneath him. He rarely points, preferring a flat palm or a slight tilt of the chin. When angry, his tail goes perfectly still. When worried, he rubs one thumb over the old fracture in his left wrist. He leans closer when listening to lies.
