Varis ibn-Zayd
Founder-Route-Master
Varis ibn-Zayd
Species
Water genasi
Appearance
Varis is a tall, weathered water genasi whose translucent skin faintly refracts prismatic light like spun glass beneath a thin film of rain. His body appears solid at a glance, but bright edges sometimes split into spectral colors when he turns. His face is narrow and sharply composed, with cheekbones ridged like wind-polished stone and a mouth that often seems to finish speaking a moment before it moves. His eyes mirror shifting desert storms: copper dust, violet lightning, black horizons, and sudden flashes of drowned blue. He moves with the careful economy of someone walking on a deck during a storm, yet his shadow occasionally takes a different route from his body. He is an unsettling contradiction, looking exhausted enough to collapse while standing with the balance of a dancer on invisible waves.
“His voice is low, dry, and resonant, with the muffled quality of speech heard through deep water. He speaks precisely but uses strange tense shifts, occasionally repeating a sentence in a subtly different wording as though testing alternate outcomes.”

Distinguishing Features
Prismatic refraction travels across his skin when he is frightened or angry.
His left iris contains a tiny rotating image of a desert moon.
Three crystalline anchor studs have fused directly into the leather and flesh of his right shoulder.
His shadow occasionally points toward the nearest dimensional rift instead of the nearest light source.
A thin line of glowing water runs from his right ear to his collarbone whenever he lies.
Voice
“A low, resonant baritone that sounds waterlogged and distant, with sudden moments of startling warmth when he speaks to frightened travelers.”
Clothing
He wears heavily reinforced, salt-encrusted travel leathers layered over a faded sand-colored tunic. The leathers are studded with crystalline anchors, each one etched with a route name in a forgotten dialect. His heavy trail boots are worn smooth by alien terrain, and a torn blue scarf is wrapped around his throat despite the heat. A battered expedition mantle hangs from one shoulder, its inner lining covered in moving cartographic symbols.
Body Language
Varis stands very still when listening, with his head tilted as if hearing surf beneath the ground. During conversation, his fingers trace invisible routes in the air. When threatened, his posture loosens rather than tightens, and his joints seem to flow like water around an unseen current.
