Voice

Coya sounds like a young trainee who learned to project over hammering and sparring: bright, firm, and slightly dry at the edges. Her breath is usually controlled from conditioning, but when her confidence cracks she takes a sharply audible first inhale and talks too quickly to hide it.

Her voice has the dry, forward edge of someone used to calling corrections across a practice yard: clear consonants, brisk starts, and a little breath held back after exertion. When rattled, her inhale becomes conspicuously measured, as if she is forcing herself to count through it; then her words come out faster and more formal. She speaks plainly with apprentices and adopts a polished, careful cadence around elders.

Speech patterns

Uses short, decisive sentences when discussing drills, then becomes unexpectedly long-winded when explaining a technique she admires.
Frames boasts as predictions: 'Give me three passes and I will have your guard figured out.'
Calls Hanji by name even when irritated, but refers to herself as 'a Kiri' when invoking duty.
When caught being wrong, asks a practical question to keep the conversation moving rather than admitting embarrassment immediately.

How to play them

Give Coya a concrete task or a chance to demonstrate skill; she responds well to honest standards and poorly to condescension. Acknowledge her effort without treating her as already destined to lead. If the party points out her privilege without dismissing her work, she may bristle first and listen later. Hanji can provoke her into a contest, but a threat to an apprentice quickly makes her serious.

Goal

Earn a future leadership role among the steel keepers through demonstrated judgment and service, not merely inheritance.

Motivation

To prove that disciplined work can make her more than a famous elder's granddaughter, while still becoming worthy of the responsibility her family name brings.

Appearance

Coya has a compact, athletic build and carries herself as if every room were a practice yard she has already measured. Her platinum-white hair is bound into a tight topknot, but a stubborn clump of straight strands falls along one side of her face and flicks against her cheek when she turns. Rose's bright blade carries a fine rose-vine decal from guard to point, its polished surface catching light in sharp, clean flashes. Coya steps with quick, economical precision, then unconsciously spreads her elbows and claims more space than she realizes. Unexpectedly, she is an enthusiastic collector of tiny pressed flowers, flattening them between scraps of sword-maintenance paper.

Clothing

A fitted charcoal practice jacket with reinforced seams, a pale sash marking her keeper trainee status, split riding trousers, and well-oiled boots. She wears no jewelry beyond a small clan clasp and keeps a strip of red cloth tied around Rose's scabbard for quick identification.

Body language

She squares her shoulders and occupies the center of a conversation without noticing. When challenged by someone she respects, her breath catches for one beat, then she exhales through her nose and shifts into a balanced duelist's stance. She often touches Rose's guard as if checking that the blade is still listening.

Distinguishing features

A clean topknot of platinum-white hair with a loose clump of face-framing strands.
Rose's elegant rose-vine decal running almost the full length of its blade.
Claims a wide personal space with her elbows and stance, then looks genuinely surprised when people step around her.
Keeps pressed flowers tucked into sword-maintenance paper, an unexpectedly gentle counterpoint to her competitive manner.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Coya is genuinely hardworking and eager to improve, yet she assumes that effort entitles her to be taken seriously. In drills she is brisk, exacting, and quick to praise a clean technique; in a social gathering she can sound pompous without realizing it. When she feels safe, she is playful and competitive. When she feels judged as Ravaan's granddaughter rather than as herself, she becomes defensive and overexplains her accomplishments. A frightened person or a careless injury cuts through her pride and brings out a practical, protective focus.

Alignment
Lawful neutral

Quirks

Counts three breaths before drawing Rose, even during a practice bout.
Collects tiny flowers and presses them in sword-maintenance paper.
Names the errors in her own footwork aloud after a spar, as if giving a report to an invisible captain.
Taps Rose's scabbard twice when entering a room, though she insists it is a balance check.
Straightens other people's practice belts without asking, then acts as if she has done them a favor they should have noticed.

Habits

Turns a disagreement into a measurable challenge, usually a timed drill or a test of accuracy.
When nervous, counts the beats of a person's breathing and then pretends she was studying their stance.
Offers help briskly and acts offended if thanked too warmly.
After a defeat, asks for a rematch only after she has written down what went wrong.

Traits · 4

Works harder than people expect from someone with her advantages, but quietly expects that work to earn her recognition.
Is quick to challenge a rival and just as quick to defend that rival from unfair criticism.
Loves precise instruction, yet bristles when a mentor corrects her in front of an audience.
Acts self-assured in public and privately rehearses conversations where she might have to admit she does not know something.

Flaws · 4

Mistakes privilege for proof that she has earned every opportunity.
Turns useful rivalry into needless competition when she feels overlooked.
Can be pompous about technique and slow to recognize forms of skill unlike her own.
Hides uncertainty behind confident instructions.

Fears · 3

That people will follow her because of Ravaan's name rather than because they trust her judgment.
Freezing again when someone depends on her.
That Rose's awakening is a sign of responsibility she is not yet prepared to carry.

Wants and needs · 4

Wants a difficult assignment that is not arranged as a favor from her grandfather.
Needs honest criticism that does not reduce her to her family name.
Wants Hanji to recognize her as a worthy rival, though she would never phrase it that way.
Needs to accept that leadership may require listening before demonstrating.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 37 · 30 ft.

Coya studies an opponent's balance and weapon habits, then presses with measured longsword strikes rather than chasing a flashy finish. She uses Rosebriar Feint to disrupt footing or open a path for an ally. She protects injured companions when she can, but her pride may draw her into a direct contest with a stronger foe. Her three Steel Resonance uses in this provisional build are a limited resource; she prefers to keep one in reserve.

Steel Keeper (Specialist), level 5. Hit Die d10; hit points use the Steel Keeper progression.
Bonded Blade. Rose is Coya's bonded longsword. It is a magical weapon technique and does not grant spellcasting.
Signature Manifestation, custom. Rosebriar Feint. Once on each of Coya's turns when she hits with Rose, she can expend 1 Steel Resonance to deal an extra slashing damage and force the target to make a Strength saving throw. On a failure, the target is pushed 5 feet. This is a custom manifestation because the class option details were not supplied.
Steel Resonance. The supplied class rules establish this resource but do not specify its maximum or recovery. For this provisional NPC build, Coya has 3 uses and regains all expended uses on a short or long rest.
Resonance Tactics, level 6. Not yet acquired.
Exploit the Opening, level 10. Not yet acquired.
Captain's Edge, level 14. Not yet acquired.
Half-elf traits. Darkvision 60 feet and Fey Ancestry, represented here as advantage on saving throws to avoid or end the charmed condition.

Actions

Rose, Bonded Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () slashing damage, or 8 () slashing damage if used with two hands. Rose is magical. Once on each of Coya's turns when she hits with Rose, she may expend 1 Steel Resonance to use Rosebriar Feint: the hit deals an extra slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet.
Unarmed Strike. Coya makes two unarmed strikes or uses an object. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Rose's Catch (custom). When a creature Coya can see hits her with a melee attack, she can expend 1 Steel Resonance to turn Rose across the blow. Add 2 to her AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. This is a custom provisional defensive technique; the supplied class mechanics do not specify a reaction feature or the resonance cost.

Services they sell

Can demonstrate keeper sword drills and basic sparring technique.
Can accompany travelers as a trained guard if the Kiri keepers authorize it.
Can assess a weapon's balance and offer practical maintenance advice.

Rewards they can give

A recommendation to the Kiri steel keepers if the party earns her trust.
A practical lesson in reading weapon stances and identifying a duelist's opening.
A pressed flower from her collection, given as a sincere token after a difficult shared mission.

Background

Coya Kiri is the granddaughter of Master Ravaan Kiri, Elder of the Kiri Clan and Steel Master of the steel keepers, one of Whym's seven original landing clans. She grew up with a warm bed, excellent tutors, and a practice blade always waiting, advantages she calls discipline because she has never had to go without them. At twelve, she watched a training blade buckle during a storm evacuation; Ravaan used his own body to shield two apprentices while Coya froze, then spent the next year insisting she learn to read a fight before trying to win it. That humiliation became her formative lesson: preparation can be courage, but it cannot replace it. During her bonding trials, the steel of Rose took on its rose-vine pattern and began answering her movements with a faint, responsive hum. She joined the keepers alongside Hanji, a water genasi whose unshowy adaptability infuriates and inspires her. They compete over drills, patrol assignments, and who can identify a weapon's weakness first. Now Coya is trying to earn a place on a dangerous inspection of the old landing approaches, while Ravaan quietly weighs whether nepotism has already opened too many doors for her.

Role in the story

A talented young rival, eager ally, or testy escort whose ambition puts her between family expectation and earned leadership. Her rivalry with Hanji can create both comic friction and a powerful partnership when a threat forces them to coordinate.
