Appearance
Vaelen Seth is a slender human woman whose stillness is more noticeable than her height. She moves through stone corridors with the careful, nearly soundless pace of someone who has spent half her life avoiding the disturbance of sleeping scribes. Her grey eyes are sharply observant behind wire-rimmed spectacles, and she studies hands, door hinges, ink wells, and worn thresholds before she studies faces. Her fingers are permanently stained at the nail beds with blue-black ink, though the stains become faintly silver whenever she handles a Breath Tablet. Dark brown hair is pinned beneath a plain linen coif, with several escaped strands curling against her temples in the cloister's damp air. She smells of lamp oil, dried mint, old leather, and rain trapped in wool. She knows about the lamp oil and leather, but not the mint, because she keeps sprigs of it inside her sleeves and has become nose-blind to the scent. The unexpected contradiction is her smile, which is warm, sudden, and almost girlish when she discovers a clever piece of marginalia or hears an especially terrible pun.
“Soft, precise, and carefully paced. Vaelen rarely uses contractions when discussing official matters.”

Distinguishing Features
The smell of dried mint, lamp oil, and old leather follows her through the archives.
Her enchanted quill has a flattened silver nib from being pressed too hard against stone tablets.
A thin line of silver ink has permanently settled into the creases of her left palm.
She carries herself like a timid clerk until someone threatens a novice, at which point her posture becomes startlingly erect and authoritative.
Her spectacles are held together at the bridge by a tiny copper wire repair that she refuses to replace.
Voice
“A low, airy contralto that carries farther than expected in stone corridors. It has the dry resonance of a small bell wrapped in cloth.”
Clothing
Modest dark grey clerical robes with practical hidden pockets, embroidered cuffs bearing tiny silver script, a linen coif, woolen stockings, and soft-soled black shoes dusted with pale archive grit
Body Language
Vaelen keeps her shoulders slightly rounded and her hands folded around her registry tome, presenting an unthreatening silhouette. Her gaze, however, is direct and tireless. When someone lies, she tilts her head toward the nearest writing surface as if listening for the falsehood in the grain of the wood. When angry, she stops blinking for uncomfortable lengths of time.
