Strata-Nine
Species
Tectonic Forged, Foundry-Tempered
Appearance
Strata-Nine is a broad, pitted basalt chassis assembled from several shades of volcanic stone, each plate bearing the dull scars of heat, grit, and repeated repair. Brass steam-pipes run from his shoulders into his ribs, clicking softly as pressure shifts through them. Behind a cage of protective iron bars, a blue Star-Sand core pulses with the slow rhythm of a buried furnace. He moves with deliberate weight, each step grinding faintly like millstones, yet his hands work with startling delicacy when adjusting a valve or lifting an injured worker. The unexpected contradiction is in his face: his heavy stone features seem carved for severity, but tiny brass shutters around his mouth flutter when he is embarrassed, making him appear almost bashful.
“His voice is low, dry, and resonant, with a faint metallic tremor beneath each word. He pauses to vent pressure before difficult answers, and his breath sounds like air passing through a narrow kiln.”

Distinguishing Features
A slow-pulsing blue Star-Sand core visible behind protective iron bars in his chest.
Brass steam-pipes that give a faint whistle when he is anxious or furious.
His fingertips are worn smooth from years of handling slag, but the undersides are etched with hundreds of tiny tally marks recording worker deaths and injuries.
One shoulder is permanently sloped where basalt armor fused during the refinery collapse.
His footsteps produce a subtle double impact, stone first, then the delayed knock of an internal pressure piston.
Voice
“A deep kiln-thrum threaded with the soft hiss of escaping steam, calm enough to steady a panicked room and heavy enough to make cartel enforcers reconsider their next step.”
Clothing
A scorched Union work-apron hangs from a brass waist harness, layered over a heatproof charcoal wrap. He wears a red-and-ochre Furnace and Ledger Union sash, heavy iron knee guards, and a tool belt crowded with gauges, wedges, chalk, and replacement seals.
Body Language
He stands with his feet spread like structural supports, shoulders slightly forward beneath the weight of his brass piping. His hands remain open and low when speaking with workers, but close around his maul the moment a superior gives an order that risks lives. Steam escapes in small white breaths whenever he is worried.
