Senior Contract Runner Varis Scale-Runner
Species
Human
Appearance
Varis is lithe and long-limbed, built like a fencer who learned to climb before he learned to walk. He moves in sudden, economical bursts, seeming to fold sideways through gaps that should not admit him. Ledger-ash clings to the creases of his skin and the fine hairs of his arms, while street grime darkens his knuckles and the soles of his feet. His face is narrow, sharp-chinned, and perpetually alert, with amber eyes that dart from seal to seal, hand to hand, and exit to exit. A pale scar crosses his lower lip, though he smiles often enough to make it look like punctuation. His fingers are stained black from ink and sealing wax. The unexpected contradiction is his hands: despite his profession, they are remarkably gentle, with the careful touch of someone accustomed to handling injured birds and delicate paper.
“Rapid, precise, and conversationally agile. Varis speaks as though every sentence is being delivered before a deadline.”

Distinguishing Features
Amber eyes with restless, calculating movement.
A pale scar cutting across the lower lip.
Ink-black fingertips and permanently stained cuticles.
A tiny brass balance tattooed behind his left ear.
A habit of tilting his head as though listening to a distant clerk reading figures.
A soft, almost tender touch that contrasts with his ruthless evasiveness.
Voice
“A quick, dry tenor with a faint rasp, like paper dragged over a bronze edge. His laughter is surprisingly soft and genuine, while his threats sound like courteous scheduling notices.”
Clothing
Form-fitting courier's leathers reinforced with flexible strips of boiled hide, a short ash-gray half-cloak, soft split-soled boots, fingerless gloves, and a dozen concealed pockets. His belt carries sealing wax, blank dockets, counterfeit tags, chalk, wire, and tiny glass vials of colored dust. Every garment bears at least one false seam.
Body Language
Varis rarely stands still. He balances on the balls of his feet, rolls seals between his fingers, and angles his body toward the nearest exit while maintaining eye contact. When genuinely angry, his movements become unnervingly slow and precise.
