Eadgyth
Eadgyth
At the table
Voice
A lower, changed voice with a dry edge from travel and frequent throat-clearing. It carries plainly across a work space; when he is tired, the sound roughens, and when alarmed his words come out faster than his breath can support.
His speech carries the local Latvian accent of the body and place where he woke, though his word choices sometimes have the practical, service-oriented cadence of his former American work. He pauses to clear his throat before unfamiliar names, and speaks in clipped instructions under pressure. When safe, he uses dry humor and asks questions that make room for other people to answer.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him through a practical need rather than a demand for his story. He responds well to directness, shared work, and fair offers. Respect his boundaries about his body and past; he will disclose more if people prove they can keep confidence and protect others.
Goal
Protect the household that sheltered him, establish a safe route for displaced people in Latvia, and find a way to contact the other changed member without exposing either of them.
Motivation
Make sure no displaced person has to face the world alone, while learning how to live in a body and society he never chose.
Appearance
A healthy young man with local Latvian features, a sturdy, newly unfamiliar frame, and a faint shadow of facial hair that he keeps trying to assess by touch. His skin shines quickly with sweat during exertion, even in cool weather. He stands as if ready to step between two people, then catches himself and checks whether doing so is safe. His grooming is unusually deliberate for a tired traveler: he keeps combing the short growth on his jaw with his fingertips, as if trying to learn the face by repetition. The most unexpected detail is a tiny, carefully folded paper crane tucked into his belt, made from a scrap of old American outreach pamphlet.
Clothing
A patched linen shirt beneath a rough wool tunic, a plain belt, hose, and a weather-darkened cloak. The garments are locally plausible but fitted awkwardly, altered from clothes borrowed by his hosts. He keeps the cuffs clean when he can and dries his clothes carefully after sweating.
Body language
He leans forward when someone is being ignored, shoulders squared as if his body can make room for them. In unfamiliar company he keeps his hands visible and rests one thumb against the folded paper crane at his belt. When angry, he moves first and explains later; when ashamed, he rubs the new stubble along his jaw and looks away.

Personality
14 traits and drivesEadgyth is quick to act and patient with people who are frightened, but impatient with systems that make them prove they deserve help. He can be warm and funny during shared work, then guarded and blunt when anyone probes his history. He wants to trust people, yet habitually prepares an exit.

Background
In his former American life, Eadgyth worked in community outreach, linking people to food, shelter, and public services. He learned to notice who was being talked over and to keep showing up after a first refusal. Then he woke in Latvia, alone, in a healthy young male body with local features and no explanation. The first days were a scramble of hunger, unfamiliar strength, unfamiliar sweat, and a voice that sounded like a stranger's. A family near a muddy track gave him shelter, but their questions about kin, parish, and home made clear how dangerous an honest explanation could be. He began using the local accent he had acquired with the body, offering simple, plausible answers and keeping the rest to himself. He is the second member of the Seven at the Gap to undergo a sex change. The first, an absent contact known to him only through coded notes, warned him not to treat the change as proof of magic or as a miracle. Eadgyth now serves as the circle's Latvia contact, moving messages and supplies between isolated displaced people. His appetite and energy arrive in unfamiliar waves, and mood shifts can leave him embarrassed by his own impatience. He is fascinated by the body's ordinary physical differences, but frightened that any explanation will invite suspicion, religious accusation, or exploitation. His current problem is that a local household that sheltered him is being pressed by a landholder for unpaid labor; helping them may expose his invented history and the circle's routes.
Role in the story
A grounded contact who can connect the party to displaced people and local hardship, while embodying the mystery of an unexplained transformation without claiming that magic caused it. He can become an ally, a protected witness, or the person who asks the party to intervene on behalf of his hosts.

- Faction
- The Seven at the Gap, a discreet mutual-aid circle of displaced modern people. It is neither a political party nor a religious order.
