Appearance
Maren Finch is a lean, agile human woman whose hands are always moving, as if invisible letters are rearranging themselves beneath her skin. Permanent black and cyan printer's ink stains her fingertips, nails, knuckles, and forearms in branching whorls that resemble delicate circuitry. Her sharp hazel eyes flick from face to face with unnerving speed, measuring pauses, breath, and tiny changes in posture. Her face is expressive enough to become almost anyone else's: a magistrate's frown, a frightened child's pout, a guard captain's bored stare. She moves with a printer's economy, never wasting a gesture, yet her sudden turns and springing steps have the loose, skittering grace of a sparrow on hot iron. The unexpected contradiction is that her hands, famous for producing flawless miniature type, are visibly scarred and clumsy-looking from old acid burns. They appear incapable of delicate work until she begins setting a line of type faster than most people can read it.
“Bright, quick, and theatrically intimate, as if she is sharing a joke across a crowded room. She can reproduce accents and vocal habits with unsettling accuracy.”

Distinguishing Features
Permanent black and cyan ink stains on her hands and forearms.
A narrow acid scar running from her left ear to the edge of her jaw.
A copper gear brooch with one tooth deliberately filed away.
An expressive face capable of uncanny vocal and visual mimicry.
A missing upper-left canine tooth that shows whenever she smiles genuinely.
Voice
“A warm alto with a quick upward lilt, capable of snapping into perfect imitations of officials, prisoners, children, and machinery inspectors. When discussing the prison barges, her voice loses all musicality and becomes flat as freshly pressed type.”
Clothing
A heavy canvas printer's apron hangs over a charcoal work tunic and close-fitting trousers. The apron has deep reinforced pockets containing movable type cases, cipher wheels, folding magnifiers, chemical etching ink, sealing wax, forged permits, wire, chalk, and folded broadsheets. She wears soft-soled boots, fingerless gloves with the fingertips cut away, a copper gear brooch belonging to the Free Spark League, and a red scarf stolen from a Directorate officer.
Body Language
Maren leans forward when interested, tilts her head when listening for lies, and rolls type slugs across her knuckles when thinking. In danger, her shoulders lower and her smile widens. She rarely stands still unless deliberately trying to make someone underestimate her.
