At the table

Voice

A dry, breathy rasp, shaped by Bavarian consonants and the habit of speaking from under stairs or through a half-open door.

Her voice has a dry, slightly breathy rasp from cold mornings and dusty hiding places. Bavarian German shapes her consonants; she clips practical statements short, but lets questions about Lombardy run on until she realizes she is talking too much.

Speech patterns

Uses plain, practical language and asks for directions more often than explanations.
When anxious, repeats the last useful noun in a question before answering.
Uses Bavarian expressions with people she trusts, then translates them if she sees confusion.
Avoids making promises unless she has checked whether she can keep them.

How to play them

Offer food, a clear task, or useful local knowledge before asking for trust. Let her choose where to sit and do not block the nearest exit. She is more forthcoming when asked about routes or practical needs than when questioned about her past.

Goal

Learn enough about Lombardy to travel and live there without depending on the lodge's hidden spaces.

Motivation

Find a life in Lombardy that is not built solely on hiding, while keeping the other two Wolpertingers safe.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A compact young woman with weather-reddened cheeks and skin roughened by cold air and lodge dust. In her fae mien, rabbit-like ears rise through her hair, and a single small owl-like feather is caught above her left temple. She moves in short, sudden starts, pausing to listen before crossing an open room. An old brass coat button hangs on a thread at her throat; its face is polished smooth where her thumb worries it. Her unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny, carefully folded map of Lombardy tucked into the cuff of her sleeve, despite having no reliable route out of the lodge.

Clothing

In 2026 she favors older-looking Bavarian clothes: a wool skirt, a plain blouse, sturdy stockings, and a short, mended jacket. The pieces are clean where she can manage it but visibly out of date beside modern lodge wear.

Body language

Her shoulders tuck inward when someone enters, but her head turns sharply toward every new sound. She stands with her weight ready to spring, then tries to disguise the readiness by fussing with her sleeve.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Marine is observant and cautious, yet curious enough to keep asking about the country beyond the lodge. She dislikes being indebted but accepts help when fear overtakes pride. Alone, she studies maps and listens; among trusted people, she can be dryly funny. When cornered, she turns evasive and stubborn rather than meek.

Combat

HP 7 · Use the table's normal movement rules; no special speed statistic assigned.

Avoids a stand-up fight. She hides, bolts through narrow gaps, and uses furniture or stair supports to break line of sight. If trapped, she bites or scratches long enough to escape. She will not abandon Klaus or Adriene without first trying to warn them.

Background

Marine is a Bavarian Gallain who took the human name Marine while moving between places where nobody asked too many questions. She arrived at the Alpine lodge with Klaus and Adriene, two other Wolpertinger Gallains. The freehold regards all three as invaders. Joanna, a pooka employed at the lodge, has repeatedly hidden them from its other residents. Marine sleeps beneath the stairs, where she can hear boots coming and slip out through a service gap. She wears clothes that look a little older than the surrounding 2026 fashions: practical Bavarian pieces repaired rather than replaced. Her formative turning point came when a frightened household mistook her fae mien for a threat and drove her out. Since then, she has learned to treat concealment as a kind of shelter, but she is trying to learn the landscape and culture of Lombardy rather than remain forever under someone else's stairs. Klaus wants a safer hiding place; Adriene presses for a way to earn their keep. Marine has not decided which of them is right.

Role in the story

A hidden outsider who can reveal the lodge's internal loyalties and invite the characters into the quiet conflict between secrecy, sanctuary, and belonging.
